Calcium carbonate

Now if I need an occasional medication for the stomach, I take plain licorice(I have low blood pressure) and calcium carbonate (which is what Tums is made of).

However, calcium citrate contains less elemental calcium than calcium carbonate, so you may need to take more tablets to get your daily requirement. Calcium CARBONATE: Absorbs best when taken WITH food, and is often found in antacids like Tums and Rolaids.

I’m hesitant because they are calcium carbonate. Have you taken these? I’d really appreciate hearing what you think about them please?

I’ve looked on Healthunlocked and various sites on Google but the only information I’ve found (which still doesn’t answer my question) is: Calcium Carbonate = 40% elemental calcium Calcium Citrate = 21% elemental calcium and varying amounts of Calcium Citrate to carbonate eg 1000mg calcium carbonate

I was diagnosed with osteopenia 4 years ago and have been on 70mg Alendronic acid once a week and calcium carbonate +vit D since then. I have not had any indication from my doctor about what happens next, but will ask for some shortly.

The tablets are calcium carbonate. I looked up calcium citrate and it says there is only 21% absorption compared to 40% absorption of calcium carbonate if latter is taken with a meal which I do. So I don't know if that will make a difference?

I found out that if I take calcium carbonate with digestive enzymes my body improves and I can walk again but it works for 3-4 hours and then I need to repeat it again. I switched now to calcium citrate because my kidneys were affected.

Yes indeed there are other changes - The calcium is now calcium carbonate. I did a google search and found that calcium carbonate is used to treat "conditions caused by too much stomach acid" so not too friendly for us Hashimoto folks.

I take a number of medications for prostate cancer, Prostap injections, Amlopidine, Alendronic Acid and Calcium Carbonate/ Vitamin D. I avoid taking the Gabapentin at the same time as the Calcium. I also suffer from Night Eating Syndrome, which kicks in even if my RLS is quiet.

I have just to look at calcium carbonate tablets for my digestion to stop working so on the basis that any calcium supp is better than none ; wise words from y'all please? They are not easy to find.
