Yes I keep falling off the wagon and start smoking again- which always means I'm drinking again. The two go hand in hand. They both have to go completely. I had a few cigarettes when I woke up this morning but then broke up the last three and threw them away.
I am ready to do this and I will succeed this time. Every time I feel the need for a cigarette or drink then I will post, either on this site or the no drinking site. That'll keep me too busy to go out and buy anything.
I have eleven days before my surgery - 27/9. I have been told that I really need to be alcohol and cigarette free which is quite obvious for health reasons. The health team have said that I should certainly not be drinking at least the day before.
I WILL DO IT THIS TIME

Keep trying. We are here to help you so post if you need us. Also, have a look at the short videos on WhyQuit.com. I know it sounds boring but they are also super helpful and cover every day of the first two weeks of a quit.
Keep trying. You have to really, really want to quit to be able to do it. I quit before a holiday. To start with I had about 2 months to go beforehand and I kept putting it off and putting it off until eventually I ran put of time and did it 2 weeks before we left.
In light of your forthcoming operation and if you are finding cold turkey too difficult, consider using NRT to help you. It doesn't really matter what form of NRT you use be it patches, an inhaler or an e-cigarette; if you think it will make it easier, do it.
Thank you mushen. I got through yesterday and apart from the four cigarettes when I first woke up I didn't have any more. Woke earlier with horrible taste in my mouth. Cravings have worn off now. Have busy day. Going out later but will not buy any cigarettes.
You need to make every effort to quit both. I had to do the same two years ago for a heel surgery. Fortunately the smoking part became permanent. Use this site and anything else to make it happen.
Hi cocoaXChange thank you for replying. I got through last night without a drink or any more cigarettes. Smoking def needs to be permanent for obvious reasons but I know that if I have a drink I'll be back to drinking more than is safe. (Most I drink is wine and maximum has been 50 units in a week)
Everyone is different, I didn't drink for the first 3-4 weeks of my quit and the first few times in a bar was tough but after a while the triggers and mental links weaken. I used an e-cig which I found helpful. I was one of those smokers who needed to have something in my hand.
CiggieStardust....You can do it.....!!! Yes, do post any time you need to....!!!
I am one of the lucky ones and could stop drinking 25 years ago with a cellar stocked with alcohol ranging from light whines to 80% proof moonshine..... Nowadays I will have a shampagne on weddings and a nice cold beer after a fishing trip and thats it...My bar in my house is stocked but I do not drink alcohol as a rule...When I stopped smoking my last 20 pack with 3 out and lighter was sitting on my fridge for maybe 1 year+.. I gave it to my domestic worker.
What I am trying to say is that you can break all the bottles of whine and all the last cigarettes but if you really want to stop you will...and you have got such a big reason to stop,Considering your health and upcoming operation....
Please give it a hell of a go...I understand your very difficult circomstances but keep trying..!
Ah this is the hardest thing to do! this is what affected me a lot of times too and then on Sunday not only did I wake up with a hangover but I awoke feeling so sad and gutted with myself for quitting. Drunk you isn't as rational and strong as sober you. So I cut down on drinking for the first while or only had one or two instead of any mad sessions! this will help too!
This group is amazing - anytime (even if its 30 times a day) you feel like reaching for one, write on this blog - someone will always be on hand to help!
I was in the same boat your in...but it really does get easier. I went to the cinema yesterday and bought mine and my other halfs cinema tickets, pop corn and drinks with my no smoking money...didn't even have to touch my bank card. things like that give me great motivation. that and I can smell things much better, tasts things much better. I am only 29 and thought I was in ok shape until I quit and saw the improvements.
Keep at it, I quit, failed, quit and failed 100 times before I just thought enough was enough...youll get there! literary one day at a time!
Well done for getting right back up, dusting yourself off and giving it another go..you WILL get there!
Thanks to you all for your help. Have just woke up and got myself a cuppa. Then stopped to think what was missing? But I'm not craving them. I will work through today
