Iron blood panel

Here’s the story. About 1 year and half ago I went to get my annual blood work done, the doc said I had iron deficiency and prescribed me a supplement. At that time I also made some dietary changes adding more red meat to my diet. This week I went to have another private blood test to see if there’s been any improvement and ferritin turned out at 180 ug/L (30-400), my serum iron was 75 ug/dL (75-160) and TIBC was 329 (250-450). However, I don’t know what to make out of those results as ferritin and tibc are very good, yet serum iron is borderline low. It also puts my iron saturation at 23% which is also on the lower side I think. Could it mean I’m still deficient?

Reason being I’m asking is because I do experience stuff like fatigue, lack of concentration and brain fog, although all other blood markers such as test, thyroid function, vitamin D etc appear to be in optimal range.

I’m not a doctor but have similar symptoms, my understanding of iron transfer saturation parameters is between 20-50%

A reading of just above 20% I would say Is good as a high reading above 50% means your system is struggling to provide the correct amount of iron required.

hello,

About 3 years ago I received lab results that showed I had iron deficiency anemia, microcytic anemia. In my case it was due to my periods and low enough I should have had a blood transfusion. I had a stroke like event that was quite scary. I started taking ferrous gluconate (no side effects) and other supplements, had uterine ablation. It just took time for my iron levels to go back up. If you’re having heavy periods then you can look up ibuprofen protocol to slow them or you can look into uterine ablation if interested. Here’s more info about the iron labs. My iron level was 7 so it took about a year with the surgery to recover with the supplements. Taking vitamin c helps to absorb the iron as well. Did your provider tell you the reason for the deficiency?
