Hi the difference between hip and knee replacements is for the knee they use a tourniquet to reduce blood flow they are unable to for the hip. I'm waiting for two knee replacements myself. I have lupus, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and APS for which at the moment I take aspirin to thin my blood. I'm nervous too.
I have had two knee replacements. RA, diabetes, asthma. I wouldnt hesitate - the medical checks at the Royal Infirmiary in Edinburgh were stringent and the after care excellent. I did careful exercises before each one which helped me back on my feet afterwards. I would be encouraging - with the proper medical advice of course.
I don't regret having both my knees and a hip replaced. Like you I have other autoimmune conditions and as long as you are honest with the nurse or doctor at the assessment appointment you have nothing to worry about. The assessments are pretty rigorous and because of my chronic conditions I was not allowed to have my ops unless a high dependancy bed was available, just in case there was a problem. There were no problems but I was admitted there anyway to be watched more closely for any unwanted effects. After 36 hours in that unit I was taken to the normal main wards.
Just a little heads up, you may have a flare up which can take a while to settle but apart from that you will be fine. Xx
Hi Mystik I am going for my 2nd knee replacement on the 25th August I have Lupus, Sjogrens, Fibomyalgia, Arthritis and Osteopiena. I had my firs knee replacement in November 2019 and went very well and a rod down into my lower leg and one going uptowards my thigh becasue of my frail bones I had no problems and recovered a lot quicker than the surgeon thought I would and I didn't need physio afterwards. good luck to you and also sending you a big hug xxxx
