My GP diagnosed me with Fibro last year. I was already on Gabapentin and Tramadol for another condition, so not prescribed any other medication.
After reading another question posted here, I'm now wondering if I should ask to be referred to either a Rheumy or Neuro? Also, what treatment do you get from each of them?

Ive seen Rhumey at two dif hospitals, Because I was not happy with the first hosp I asked for a second oppinion. The second Consultant I saw was fantastic an thourough BUT she has asked my doc to put me on Gabapentin and pain meds so I personally think even if you do ask for a refferal your treatment may stay the same. Your doctor sounds on top of things and supportive, my GP is a pain in the rear! good luck xxx
What is important is that thorough testing was carried out. Fibro symptoms are similar to those of many conditions, so mis-diagnoses and missed diagnoses are horribly common. Many GPs are not confident running all the tests, which is why many people get referred for diagnosis.
My advice is to ask for a referral to the nearest Pain Clinic. Not only will they give you a definitive diagnosis and correct medication, they will also refer you to a Pain Management Course and can, if you ask nicely, refer you for hydrotherapy.
Thanks for your replies. I already go to the Pain Clinic for another illness, and I mentioned my Fibro dx to the Consultant, but she just nodded her head!
My personal experience is with a Rheumatologist and she gave me my diagnosis and changed all my meds, which made a big difference to my life. I had to change Consultants because the first one I saw did not acknowledge my symptoms so I went for a second opinion. I had to be "released" by the first Consultant and "accepted" by my present Rheumatologist. It was worth it! Wishing you the best of luck Tendo!
