My lovely husband has booked a weeks holiday in Southern Spain through SAGA - full board in a hotel overlooking the sea with optional outings. Bit nervous as we haven't flown off abroad for a long time; not since I developed fibro on top of other conditions and I stopped being able to walk any distance and fatigue got worse.
I have my medication sorted out and my prescriptions printed out along with a letter to say I carry heparin syringes if need them and the lancets for my blood testing machine. My husband has organised assistance at both ends and SAGA has said that their rep will get me onto the coach.
We are going to Southern Spain about an hour away from Malaga. What would be helpful is if anyone who has been to Spain could give me any tips about getting out and about and what it is like for disabled people. I want to go on the outings but worry about the walking. Any tips welcome.
Thanks

Panda, I can't give any tips on Spain itself, but one wee suggestion I would have is to take a nice, soft cushion to sit on while on the plane. The last time I flew I was in severe pain in my backside and hip area because I found the seat so uncomfortable.
I hope you have a lovely time, and the sun and heat help with any pains you have. x
Use your Saga Rep to find out about tours and outings. They can tell you if there are steps, or uneven surfaces, also what distance you might need to walk. If you need to use a wheelchair, they can recommend places that are wheelchair friendly. That is a large part of their job so use them. Hope this helps, enjoy the food, weather and time to chill. Take care x
I have been to Spain a few times traveling with assistance and my travelscoot. Just schedule yourself some rest the first day of your holiday after you arrive in your hotel. Will you travel with a wheelchair? If not and you are worried about walking there are plenty of places along the coast near Malaga that rent them. I find that Spain is quite accessible (especially the towns along the coast) Enjoy the sunshine!
You will love Spain , the warmth will do you good .. as others have said you can rent a mobility scooter etc to aid your holiday
Make sure you arrive early at the airport for the assistance - pick up before you go (Poundland or Superdrug or boots ) some of the DVT socks they are expensive at the airport . Drink plenty of fluids ( gin and tonic ) water etc take an empty bottle through security and fill it up at the fountain before you board
You have received lots of good advice but make sure you are adequately insured with all your conditions and meds noted.
I agree that asking the rep before booking trips she will tell you if their is many steps and it's hilly. If it is there will be plenty of parts they take you too that is accessible. Just try and relax and enjoy.Saying that I worry so much and will be going away myself.
Hi Panda I live in fuengarola in south of Spain and my mother lived there for over 30 years. Not that I know much about disability things. However I do know the spaniards are well well equipped when it comes to disability things. As the others have said ask your tour guides to help in all areas and also speak to Saga before you leave and ask them also to speak to your tour guides in Spain. Some areas are very hilly and lots of steps so it’s important to speak to the tour guides before you set off. Where I lived in Spain the sea front is lovely and flat all along the coast and there is plenty of seats but you will need a cushion to sit on and it’s not unusual to see people with cushions. I hope that you and your husband has a lovely holiday and the weather is lovely and warm for you both. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🌹🌹😘😘
Hi I am on holiday in Southern Spain at the moment been here for three months. The warm weather will help it will lift your spirits if nothing else. As mentioned in a previous post all along the coast is flat many areas have boardwalks. So it is ideal for disabilities hope you have an amazing time and that the weather is kind to you.
As moal61 says take a cushion ,we came over on sat and it’s was very uncomfy on bottom and back which spread to my problem knee .Also don’t know if it’s the same in hotels but the houses are very very cold .The sun is shining and it’s warmer outside than in by a mile ,I’m needing a jumper to walk out and about in husband shirt so bring some warm things . Have a lovely break .Xx😇
