Looking for some reassurance please. I am 19 weeks pregnant. I get awful hayfever every year which causes seasonal asthma. I have mentioned this to midwives and doctors - both NHS and private and all said no to antihistamines and didn’t provide any other options.
3 weeks later, I ended up in A&E last night struggling to breathe. They did all the could but despite nebuliser couldn’t get the airways to open up. So opted for steroids (40mg) and the usual subutomal. This didn’t open up the airways BUT it made me violently sick there up green and yellow mucus. Within minutes I felt better!
I was discharged with a steroid pump and more oral prednisone. I have used prednisone as part of my ivf protocol albeit a lower dosage. I am a bit nervous to take this as I am worried about the impact on the baby.
What are your thoughts? Anyone being in a similar position?
Thank you! I am just worried!

Hi, I'm surprised they said you can't use antihistamines as I used them when I was pregnant for really bad hayfever, they have certain ones that are considered safe, my baby is 11 weeks old and he is very healthy but I'm in Australia so maybe different beliefs or something, I'm not sure about steroids during pregnancy but I would say it's better for your asthma to be under control because it can be very dangerous during pregnancy that's what my doctor told me because I had really bad asthma during my pregnancy, I wish you all the best
I would have thought the same. I am in the UK and the blanket rule here is nothing is best unless it’s severe which I was last night. Congrats on the birth of your healthy baby.
Did you take the same medication as me? Steroids and pump?
thank you so much. Yes, I did see my GP and she advised against loratadine (which is systematic) things you take in the veins or by mouth. The inhalers are fine as it works topically. Ie it’s only goes to the lungs where systematic treatment goes into the blood stream and therefore the placenta.
I have been prescribed steroids and fostair which I am using but not entirely happy as would have preferred to go drug free! So worried about the risks to my baby.
