Mirena/IUD - how was it for you?

I was diagnosed last November after symptoms for a long time - heavy periods, pain during sex, pain and bleeding between periods and at ovulation, pain going to the toilet. Had a laparoscopy and ablation on deposits on my uterus, ovaries, bladder, and bowels! Numerous cysts on the outside of my ovaries. At the same time, had a hysteroscopy for some polyps inside my uterus and they inserted a mirena coil at the same time.

Since then I’ve been continuing to experience a lot of pain and bleeding - the bleeding is now less heavy and I don’t have periods/ a “cycle” anymore, but I do still get bleeding. Pain during sex and lack of libido has continued - have been checked and the IUD is still comfortably in place and has not shifted. When I went to the doctor they were very dismissive and just said that my body was adjusting.

For anyone who’s had a coil/mirena specifically, what were your symptoms like in the first few months. 9 months on, the pain and bleeding is still there and I expected it to have levelled out by now.

I have had Mirena for 2 years- put in as part of an ablation laparoscopy. The first 9-12 months were not fun but now I have a small period each month my pain has reduced massively. I do experience pain with sex now but it's way less than the first year. I do still get regular cramps but they sit at like a 5 or 6 pain as opposed to a 9. The first few months were similar to yours, so I'm not sure whether it's the coil itself or how our bodies respond. Having been on the combined pill, mini pill, and a double dose of the mini pill I would say this is the least pain I have experienced personally. I hope it eases off for you and you are in less pain soon. 💛

I really struggled with it. I had it in for about 3-4 months. I had regular pain and I would bleed for 3 weeks at a time and this only got worse the longer it was in. I had pain during sex and my mental health plummeted with it. I had it taken out in the end and everything leveled off and having nothing helped more than having it in.

I didn’t have the best experience but I know others that have said it has done wonders for them, I think it is just such a personal thing as to how your body is coping with it. If you aren’t happy then there is nothing wrong with changing it if you feel it isn’t for you
