I’ve been diagnosed this last year with endo on bowel, uterus and ovaries, fibroids and adenomyosis, had symptoms for 20 years however.
I had my Levosert coil changed in November back to a Mirena. I always had relief from Mirenas in the past, especially for the first 18 months of having them inserted, only for symptoms to slowly return.
However since I’ve had this new one in, I’ve been getting ocular migraines every two weeks or so and pain in pelvis, hips, legs and (sorry) rectum maybe three days out of four. I’ve stopped actually bleeding or spotting though.
Has anyone had any experience of Mirena changing its effectiveness over time?
thanks in advance- google has made me more confused!

Hi, yes, I had mine changed in December and the ocular migraines have been daily! I'm having it removed next month as its just been unbearable. I have heard there are quite a lot of people who suffer with migraines that the mirena makes them worse. I know everyone is different but it's worth considering.
Oh thank you so much for your reply and I’m sorry to hear it’s been so awful with the migraines. Did you have the migraines with your previous coil?
I’m really stumped because this is my fourth back to back coil and haven’t experienced this before, constantly achey and with these bizarre migraines. Maybe I should get it removed and see what happens- although that scares me too!
Hi, this is my 4th mirena coil, each time it has been changed the ocular migraines have got progressively worse, I can't wait to have it removed, I guess if the migraines cease I will know it was the coil. Also my gynecologist mentioned the last mirena was a slightly different one, maybe ask if a different kind was used on you? Xxx
I will do that and I’ve decided to keep a diary of everything, food, pain, and anything else I can think of and make a decision about whether to remove it. It has relieved the most awful days of pain so I’ve got to weigh up which is worse- the migraines or the cramps!
I hope the removal goes well and would be interested to know if it helps with the migraines! Good luck and thanks for sharing xx
I’ve been getting constant reoccurring migraines, major flare ups downstairs and really weird bleeding I won’t bleed for months and then will suddenly bleed for again months non stop. I’m getting my mirena taken out on 22nd March and coming off of all hormonal birth control to see how I get on with it. I’ve been doing lots of research and to be honest the mirena coil has scared me since. I follow a girl on tiktok called Sophia Panella who also has a podcast and she has released a podcast episode about her journey on birth control and the research she did on the Mirena and the side effects she has experienced. It’s definitely a good one to listen to!!
