Inflammation on colonoscopy

Hi everyone

I had a colonoscopy today after around a year of diarrhoea, constipation, bleeding, tenesmus, BM at least 5x day and huge amounts of mucus.

Lots of biopsies were taken and there were a couple areas of inflammation in my distal rectum, also some small haemorrhoids further down.

The biopsy results can take 4-6 weeks to come back, I just wanted to see if anyone could help me understand what this means?

My fit and calprotectin came back normal, but recent blood test show elevated CRP and neutropenia.

Thanks so much 🥰

It's impossible to say if you have IBD or not. Several things can cause inflammation that is not related. I don't know where you live but that seems like a long wait to get the biopsy report back. When are you scheduled to see your dr? Keep us posted.

Thank you for your reply 😊

It’s not an urgent referral which is why it’ll take abit longer! I won’t see my dr again until I receive the results.

Yes I’ll be sure to post when I receive them x

usually after a colonoscopy preferably the day after since you won’t be under anesthesia. The dr. Will tell you if they found anything serious.

Like polyps and if they found polyps they usually have them removed during the colonoscopy.

From your symptoms it sounds a lot like my case. Which is left sided colitis.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your message 😊

I have a copy of the report and nothing worrying was found, just the inflammation. I just need to be patient and wait for the results! X

Hi. I also had my colonoscopy done about a year ago. Had diarrhea some bleeding and huge amounts of just passing mucus with gas. It was terrible. Colonoscopy was clear they found nothing. Had biopsies done also which were clear.I still have the passing of just mucus but i went gluten and dairy free and yes it has helped a lot. I also take one loperamide a day to control things but going dairy and gluten has changed my life. I have the odd bad day and eat something with wheat or gluten and then i feel the need to pass wind but its not its just clear mucus coming out. Have you tried going gluten free

Thank you for your reply! Glad you are feeling abit better now, it really is a lot of trial and error isn’t it!

Yes I’m gluten free and dairy free and also on low fodmap, unfortunately it hasn’t made any difference 😔 x

I have had similar symptoms, although more alternating between constipation and looser bowel movements. Some have been huge and soft, which is not so bad, some have been very large and painful to pass (sorry for too much information there!) They're both usually followed by blood mixed in stool, bloody mucus or just mucus. Very sharp left-handed pain and an unfortunate stabbing pain in my backside which leaves me unable to move (sorry again!)

My colonoscopy found inflammation, "granularity" and a few ulcers around the rectal area along with a tortuous colon. The surgical team asked for Gastroenterology to see me urgently, but had a wait of 6 months unfortunately. He said it looked pretty healthy and not like colitis, so I'm a bit confused. He didn't say much about the biopsy results in the appointment, but he's since copied me into a letter to whoever did the biopsy to ask for clarification and if they "thinks it's a bit of colitis", because the biopsy showed "a couple of inflammatory cells and a little bit of crypt distortion". Since that appointment I've been diagnosed with Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease (symptoms most like Lupus and Systemic Sclerosis), so not sure if mine is symptoms connected to that. I've had constipation my whole life, but something has changed.

I found eating fruit & vegetables that are easier to digest made my symptoms a bit better, but have been a bit worse going back to high fibre. It's hard to know what to do for the best while you're waiting, but perhaps try fruit & vegetables that are easier to digest might help (I was having root vegetables, cooked fruits without skin, some fruit juices/smoothies)? I think nuts and apples with skin seem to aggravate things for me. I hope you hear back about the biopsy soon and figure out what's going on, as I know what it's like when you're waiting.
