Private Colonoscopy Scotland

I’m looking to see if anyone has experience of paying privately for a colonoscopy in Scotland. Looking for an idea of costs and location.

I don’t have a diagnosis for Crohn’s/colitis but I do have coeliac disease, IBS, acid reflux and lactose intolerance. I also have a family history of colitis.

I’ve been on this journey of unexplained gut issues and abdominal pain for over a decade now…hence the multiple diagnoses but haven’t got to the reason which explains why it is still ongoing.

Several times, doctors have queried doing a colonoscopy but my calprotectin levels are not sufficiently raised. I recently paid for a private healthcare consultation (desperation) and they said that given my symptoms it could be possible that I have microscopic colitis which wouldn’t affect stool analysis but would need a colonoscopy to diagnose.

I feel like I’ve been passed from pillar to post for too long and seriously fed up living with constant chronic pain/feeling unwell.

Apologies for the long post…hoping some of you are Scotland based and may be able to help!

I was treated at Ross Hall hospital glasgow where they diagnosed colitis and chronic adhesions on bowel bladder abdomen and pelvis. Extensive surgery was carried out and it was a game changer it gave me my life back.I am able to eat a restricted diet get plenty of exercise and take medication to treat residual symptoms of abdominal spasms and mild to moderate pain.

The doctor was fantastic and the care I was given was outstanding.

I was covered by private health insurance so can't comment on finance's but I'm sure they would be able to advise you on that.

I wish you well and hope you get a treatment that works for you.

I am treated at the Western General in Edinburgh for my Crohns’s on the NHS, have been for 21 years. They are very good at listening before jumping in with a remedy that might not be appropriate at that time. They also take part in research into IBD. I don’t know what their charges are for private treatment though and I know that current legislation makes it difficult for GP’s to refer patients to hospitals outwith their health board but it might be worth gently nudging them to look further afield as your local health board has had a decade of indecision. You might want to consider sending a copy of your request to your MP as well. I wish you well.
