I happened on this and thought people here may be interested. These are only preliminary results, a paper is due later this year.

This is a fabulous area of research that has long been neglected and ignored by the medical profession who have for decades ignored their patients who have told them processed food makes their Crohns worse. I only wish my parents were still alive to read this research and feel vindicated for all those years they brought their child home cooked food into hospital for a year because NHS catering switched to factory prepared ready meals which made me worse. The staff indulged them because doctors told my parents that I wouldn’t make it beyond my 20’s.

I am in my 60’s now, have three children and still avoid processed food with all their emulsifiers.

Thank you Petabyte for letting us know about this research paper.

You're very welcome. I don't have Crohn's myself but I knew someone with it and he explained what it was like. Sounded terrible, you have my sympathy.

Thanks for this…very interesting. I try to avoid additives but it is very hard, especially when travelling or eating out. It is time governments took more responsibility for what goes into our food. Some potentially carcinogenic additives that we have known about since the ‘80s are still permitted in food and cosmetics. There is a free app called Yuka which scans bar codes to help you make good choices on any packaged food. I highly recommend it.
