Knees got the better of me for now

Oh dear, I was SO enjoying my first two weeks, getting a real high from it, but, alas, I have to give up for now because of slight knee strain. I was doing the warmup and warm downs religiously, being super-cautious due to age and lack of fitness, but then last Thursday I jumped out of the car and ran for a train, no thought of warmups at all, just enjoying the fact that I could actually run for a train again! That was fine, but a ten mile walk around London afterwards and I was suddenly hit with knee pain. What an idiot! Rested for three days and my first short walk today was fine, but I realise I have to sort out gait issues with a podiatrist before trying running again, due to a bunion. Also the physio has given me lots of knee strengthening exercises. I hope to be back one day, but to be honest may just stick to my usual long walks and return to swimming for aerobic fitness instead. Loved the running while it lasted though, all 90 seconds of it 😀 and it has spurred me on to get fitter somehow. Thanks for the support you gave, though, what a lovely bunch you all are.

Sending you lots of recovery wishes, and it sounds like you got a plan (helped by physio) to get you back to running soon.

I also had knee niggles in the first year of running. It is pretty common as the body gets used to this added strain and mobility. So take it step by step and you will get stronger. The body will adapt.

And as Oldfloss mentioned, we do have two sister forums where our fitness community mingles, one for walking (Active10) and one for Strength & Flexibility, (S&F).

So you are very welcome to hop over. Plenty to do whilst on the IC (Injury Couch).

Sorry to hear about your knees. Of course you may decide running isn't for you, but if you enjoyed it, then can I just encourage you by saying that I have mild arthritis in both knees plus an old knee injury(not running related) and my knees have been considerably better since I started running.I've been running for a while now and have picked up other injuries, but never my knees!

Good luck with the rehabilitation and with whatever you decide to do next.

Why give up when in your words it's a 'slight' knee strain ?

Because I judge this is the best approach for my body right now.

I hear you and that's a very sensible approach - we should all listen to our bodies and make appropriate decisions.

I think you're being a bit harsh on yourself re: 'idiot' for going on a 10 mile walk - nothing wrong with that. You say "... but a ten mile walk around London afterwards and I was suddenly hit with knee pain..." was that at the start, during, or after the walk ?

It's almost certainly the case that you just need to modify your approach to running and walking. Where in the program had you got to ?

How frustrating for you! Remember how much you enjoyed running and when you’re ready, you can pick it up again. Physios are magic people. Hopefully the exercises will have you feeling fit and strong soon. Before you know it you’ll be back being active again in whatever way works best for you now. Who knows, maybe the runs will come back sooner than you think! The main thing is to listen to your physio and your body. There’s absolutely no rush.

Sending loads of good wishes your way. Would love to hear how you’re getting on with your recovery if you ever fancy updating. ❤️
