Down in the dumps ☹️

So, did my week 8 Run 1 yesterday and unfortunately have been suffering since then with what appears to be sciatica 😢

So certainly will not be doing my planned run tomorrow !

Went for a short easy walk today and have been taking ibuprofen and done several stretch excercises to help relieve it, but I don't think this is going anywhere soon , so very fed up .

We will see how it is tomorrow but will not be running .

Hope to be back on track soon but will need to be sensible about this ☹️

Oh Mister... I feel for you... I‘ve never had it but imaging it’s not nice...

I can appreciate how hard it is trying to be sensible when you’re loving the programme but please do!

Thinking of you and fingers crossed you will soon be out there running again

🤞

Listen to your body and I’m sure you will soon be back out 👏👏

Oh dear! I’ve found that lying down instead of sitting, a gentle walk, painkillers and deep heat work for me. Gentle stretches. Hope it goes away soon and you can get back into it. I know how you feel having had to take 4 rest days last week!

Thanks Jools !

Was it sciatica in your case ?

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Graduate in reply toInstructor57

Maybe. I thought it was my hip at first. Then I realised it was aching in my lower back, on the right and down the back of my right leg. It that’s sciatica, then yes.

Instructor57 profile image

Wow, exactly the same here !lower back , bottom of the bottom as well and back of the leg.

Do you still feel it ?

How are the runs ?

Jools2020 profile image

Still feel it slightly, but not when I’m warmed up and either walking or running. Did my best time today for the 25 minute runs! I took an extra rest day before today’s run and I may take an extra one again before my next one. I’m going home tomorrow, so will be running in the fens again for W8 R1 😀

Ok that's good !

I will certainly have tomorrow off and see how it is after that 😐

Oh goodness I get sciatica quite regularly and it is so debilitating :(. Stretches, warm water therapy (bath/shower) hot water bottle and pain relief!

I usually find it resolves relatively quickly if I continue to do light exercise and the above.

Thanks for your input !

Yes, it's horrible, sorry you suffer with it.

Does it stop you running?

BowlingT profile image

It has in the past when I would go to the gym.... I’ve not had it since doing couch to 5k which is probably the longest I have ever gone without an episode. It has stopped me hiking in the past, we used to regularly walk for hours but it got to the point where I would not be able to leave the house when I’ve had it bad.

Strange isn't it , I guess it effects everyone differently.

I will just have to see how it goes 😐

That is a shame to hear. But , as you will have read on here, listen to your body and get back to it when it and you are good and ready ... take it easy!

Thanks, I'm certainly going to have a rest for s few days and see how it goes 😐

Digging your thumb deep into the buttock where the pain is and pressing hard for a minute can help. Hope it subsides soon

Thank you and thanks for the tip !

Don't worry about it too much you've earned a bit of rest so take it easy for a few days. You won't lose significant condition /fitness for about a couple of weeks so don't stress about it. Not sure if there are other exercises you can do during this rest time.

PS. It's nice of you to pause and give me a chance to catch up ;)

PPS. Fantastic result in F1 qualifying today! :)

Thanks for the support

I appreciate it 👍

Gutted really, but your right , I have run every other day for a long time , just hope it clears up before too long , so frustrating at this stage ,

Haha you will soon catch up 😂

And yes , interesting qualifying in those conditions,👍😬

Really feel for you, sciatica is awful. I hope it eases soon - so disappointing for your progress to be disrupted.

Bad luck! Having suffered with sciatica recently, before my latest injury, check out if it's your glutes. If you have a tender spot on your glutes then a foam roller works wonders, plus doing bridges and glute exercises generally. It's well worth dealing with it by exercise as well as rest. Piriformis syndrome - worth researching! Good luck, hopefully it will be short lived.

Instructor57 profile image

Thank you , and yes i have come across Piriformis syndrome during my research in the last 2 days , and to be honest that is exactly where the pain/ache is .

literally a pain in the backside .

Thanks for your advice 👍

I'm no expert, but having researched a lot, it might be worth checking out your posture when you run too. I like James Dunne youtube videos - he is very helpful and provides straightforward advice. I think bad habits can get embedded when you're concentrating on getting through the runs, so might be worth working on hip stability etc. That said, I have become a complete geek about all of this due to injury. Glutes are a vulnerable area for runners!

Instructor57 profile image

Thank you !

i very much welcome your advice , i could very easily have lazy glutes as i am a driving instructor so sat down a lot . but also have a weak lower back as well so hard to discriminate between sciatica and piriformis

Only just seen this ...bummer! sorry you’ve been laid up hopefully with rest you’ll soon be up in your running shoes again. Seems like lots of good advice out there to help too. Good luck!
