Numbness in leg!!

I am a newbie here and have made a couple of previous posts.

I thought I might now share this recent experience.

I have been experiencing some tingling and numbness in my right foot and leg for a while. Being a male I obviously ignored it.

It started happening on my runs - but I just kept going.

Just before Christmas I had finished a 25 minute run and was at home ready to take a shower. Suddenly my right leg and right arm went completely numb and I couldn't walk. I was taken to emergeny and after 12 hours there was transfered to the stroke unit. This was in a major hospital here in Sydney.

I was given every test possible and fully wired up to a variety of monitors 24/7. As well as blood tests every day etc etc.

After 5 days they could find nothing wrong - and said I seemed very fit. Nothing on the MRI and other scans. Heart in good order with a low RHR.

The only thing found at all was I had a very low B12 level.

I was discharged and had B12 injections every two days for a fortnight.

Obviously no running for a while, being in hospital etc.

The head neurologist said I shouldn't run for a while - but after the injections the symptoms stopped.

I have started running again - with shorter runs to build up again.

Back to 25 minutes now and no problems.

And since the B12 course, quite a few other issues have cleared up!!

Apparently I am not able to process B12 normally from food - who knew??

So for other runners out there, give some thought to B12. It is vitally important and you probably wouldn't know if you were seriously low.

Thanks for sharing...... I had something similar ( not quite so bad tho). I had numbness and tingling all down my right side, I saw a neurologist, and they did all the tests, and it was found that I was very deficient in vitamin D which also explained all the pains I was getting. I’m fine now too, but it goes to show how important it is to get anything checked out..... good luck as you continue with your running.

Wow - in a way lucky the running showed up this deficiency. So glad you got to the bottom of it. What a worrying time for you. Lovely to hear you were declared very fit. Happy running

Wow - that must have been very scary for you. Glad you are now well and had the medical ok to get back to running. Even better - that things are going so well with your running. 👍🙂
