Feeling quite proud of myself

At 63 and never run at all I have just completed W4R3. I am even looking forward to my next run but think I am really going to have to push myself. I have only run on my treadmill so far but maybe as my confidence grows I will be able to run outside. Onwards and upwards 😀

Well done. Enjoy the program and the rewards each success brings. I have only run outside so cannot compare to the treadmill but I’ve enjoyed them all, even and I think especially the one in rain and hail!

When I run on the treadmill I can set it at a pace and it makes me keep going. My worry is that when I run outside I won’t keep up the pace if I become tired.

Rosiepug profile image
RosiepugGraduate in reply toSasquatch19

I think the pace just needs to be whatever is comfortable. It doesn’t matter how far or fast we go, it’s the time running that matters. I sometimes feel it would be quicker to walk but I focus on keeping going and enjoying the feeling of increasing fitness. Indoors or out, you’ve got this.

I thought the same as you regarding the motivation outside but I’ve discovered so many local places that I didn’t know existed it’s sometimes like going on an adventure! 😂

Well done 👍🏻Will give it another couple of weeks and then may venture outside 😀

Oh well done you! I’m in the same age range but top you by a couple of years! I’m doing it on the treadmill too. I got to w8r2 but had a health wobble. A couple of weeks off and I’m back on it! It feels good doesn’t it. I don’t know about you but I feel energised. I’ve been thinking I should venture outdoors! I think I’ll get to running 30 mins comfortably and then venture out!! Good luck we can do this 👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks for your support. I am off to visit my daughter in Canada in 6 weeks which should just coincide with completing the challenge. There is a lake near her which is roughly 5km round so my aim is to run round that when I get there.

Will let you know how I get on😀

Well done! I am also 63 and haven't run (even for a bus!) since school! Just finished wk3 run 3...wk 4 starts tomorrow. I too felt a bit awkward going out running but get in car and drive for a few minutes before running so neighbours don't see me!! Ha ha!

Sasquatch19 profile image

That’s a great idea and one I might use. Will keep going on the treadmill for another couple of weeks, and then, who knows 😀

I am nearly 62 & starting running again after a very long break. I do prefer outdoors. Treadmill so full. Give it a go.

I’m 64 , I was 63 when I stared C25K. You’re doing fantastically well. Keep going.

Well done. It’s great isn’t it. I too am 63, started in December and am now doing 5k regularly ( although not in 30 mins yet). I have only run outside and yes, it can be tough. Wind, rain, heat and hills all affect your pace but ultimately, I think it must increase your fitness and resilience. You do have to change your pace, and sometimes, walk up hills, jump over puddles etc but that is part of the fun. Give it a go, maybe try a park run near you. Keep going though. It has changed my life and silenced the doubters who told me I was probably too old to start this.

Jonno34 profile image

Good on yer! I have no issue with treadmill, in fact did the c25k on it. It has a lot of advantages mainly that you can keep to a speed that you can prove to yourself you can maintain. I have gradient at 1.5 which is supposed to help simulate outdoors. Keep it up!

Ooh well done!!!! I was close on w8r3 but had a health glitch. So a couple of weeks off. Back on it now. Just did a 25min run so all has not been lost! What sort of distance are you running in your 30 mins? Seriously well done you !!

in reply tobessie37

Did 3.05 k in 30 minutes (I go slow) just enjoying being outside and feeling fitter than I have done in years. Hope you’re over your health glitch now as you’re so close to graduating and being able to go with the flow😊

Hi, I am 64, and I agree with you, on week 4 now. I love running on the treadmill and like to watch my progress on the display. I am thinking of finishing C25K then attempting outdoors. I find the tarmac and the undulations very hard and did not find it easy to pace myself. From reading previous posts I think I need to take it much slower when I first start outside. Anyway at the moment I am also doing a lot of walking so get to see plenty of different places.

You are going great - enjoy!

That is great. I never go in a treadmill but it was a good move to get out of the park and onto a public path. Felt self conscious at first but really no one is looking at you.

Hi , well done . I have started Couch in January and have made it to Week 6 and also similar age and no running experience. I prefer running outside but flat surfaces are the best . Good luck and trust the programme it is awesome .

Well done, I only run on my treadmill at the moment but will probably venture outdoors when I'm on holiday. I'm out walking with my dogs a lot and weirdly like to keep the two activities separate.

There is nothing to worry about running outside. Just don't look like Mo or Bolt! Fleece, Trousers, trainers, hat pulled down and gloves. Look as if you are going for a walk. Then jog bits of it. As an older new runner myself, W3R2 done today, you soon learn where inclines are in the streets and paths, and folks you pass, smile, thinking "I should be doing that!" Choose a level route and enjoy the fresh air and smell of the flowers. Enjoy yourself. Its only important how long your run for! NOT distance!

Summernights profile image
SummernightsGraduate

Well done. If you venture outside I’m sure you’ll love it. The birdsong in my park is a huge reward early in the morning! Good luck!

Hi Hatman

No way! Just treated myself to new leggings, a longish running top and bright socks! All very ‘tasteful’ though!!

I agree with you about the fresh air and flowers 💐

That's fantastic terrific news well done we all know what you've gone through to get where you are now and if it's any consolation it gets better.

I started at 63, a very " indoors" person, but I love trundling around my running routes. If you're going slowly, you see small signs of changing seasons, hear the birds, etc. Found the treadmill very dull in comparison! Give it a go outside at a quiet time and see how you find it.

Hi 65 year old here now on week 8...who would have thought. Even looking at snazzy runner gear now. Keep up the good work it is possible and you will love this journeyxx

Don't worry . You will eventually succumb. I found that a favourite pub of mine (in Lacock) was just about 5km away mostly along a towpath. Decided to run to get a beer and run back (part of my 10km attempts) Got to the pub, realized I had left wallet at home and they didn't take contactless on the phone. Started to get dark so phoned home for a lift. Mrs SeaSpaniel only insisted on a months extra washing up.

Sounds like you're doing really well. I started this malarkey a year ago aged 61, and have now achieved 10k, having never run properly in my life before. Trust in the programme and you will do it. I have done all of my runs outside and am in awe of people who manage it on a treadmill, so go you!! Perhaps you could try an outside run when the weather improves - it's quite interesting seeing different places, and no-one will take any notice of you apart from other runners probably, who will generally give you a smile/thumbs up. Anyway, best of luck with the running. 👍😀

I was the same as you and the same age. I really never thought I would do 3 minutes, never mind 30. But I did! And then I followed on with a park run the next week. I'm.not pretending I jogged all the way - far from it - but I did have a tremendous feeling of achievement. So keep at it! You'll get there.

I am 62 & am also on W7 but have fallen by the wayside this week because of the wet weather because I am the opposite & cannot do the treadmill, need to be outside.

Sasquatch19 profile image
Sasquatch19Graduate in reply toAnneT27091954

That’s a shame Anne but I’m sure you will get back into it when the weather improves. I graduated this morning, still on the treadmill , but going to do my first park run on Saturday so will see how that goes. Don’t worry too much about missing a couple of runs, just grit your teeth and get back into it. Good luck 👍🏻😁
