Any advice on the best trainers to use in wet and muddy conditions . I've nearly ended up on my backside several times so am wondering if I need to change?

As always any advice greatly appreciated

Trail shoes will make a lot of difference. They come in a confusing array of styles with grips designed for everything from mud to rock. Find some general purpose ones that fit well, but be warned, you don't want to be running too far on the road in trail shoes.

Cross Country Spikes

It is obviously beneficial to stay upright! Spikes or studs are the best way to do this. There are specialist cross country running shoes with a slightly more flexible spike plate than you'll find on a track spike, with shallow studs to compliment the spikes. The flexibility underfoot will feel more comfortable on the uneven ground of cross country courses. The Brooks Mach or Adidas XCS – available in both men's and women's fit – along with the Saucony Kilkenny (unisex) are good options due to the fit of the uppers. In keeping with most spikes, new manufacturing processes allow them to be made with almost seamless uppers, making for a very comfortable fit.

I have a pair of more mile Cheviot trail shoes which I find OK, and my nephew's been using a pair at Parkrun, and on Saturday got to within 2 secs of his PB in them that he got with his road shoe's on the same course back in the summer. And they have good reviews on Amazon, they have ladies sizes about £30. Trail shoe's come as neutral so you don't have a gait analysis for them, maybe wear a good cushioned running sock in them, but don't wear them for running on the road..
