I’ve been on a bit of an up and down journey lately. Didn’t run for ages over the winter then was just getting back into the swing of things and I’ve had foot issues. Feels like I’ve got a small stone under the base of my 3rd and 4th toes ( think it’s more arthritis 🙄🥴) and I’ve been struggling to walk very far without pain , let alone run any distance.
I’ve now found a way to pad this area and started running again. Then had a bombshell dropped on me when my daughter announced she’d found a lump!!! In her left breast and the only way she noticed it was it felt like an electric shock when the shower water hit that area!!!! She is 37, not in the age group for routine mammograms, so unless she had felt this it would have gone unnoticed!! It was at the top of her left breast and just felt like a water balloon. So off she went to her dr and she felt it, asked all the relevant questions… any puckering? No.Any discharge?no. Any family history? Nope and then said It doesn’t present like a cancer so probably a cyst but I’ll send you up to be checked just in case. And you’ll get an appointment within the fortnight. Which she did, 10 days later, on the Thursday,we went up and she went in saw the dr, they did ultrasounds… hmmm not sure looks like a cyst, actually there’s a smaller one underneath too so did biopsies and blood tests, just to check….but then the dr told her “I wouldn’t say this if I thought it was cancer but I don’t so don’t worry and you have another apt with me next Friday and I’m sure it will be fine”.
Fast forward to next Friday and guess what? Dr was wrong and it IS cancer. So reeling from that and going from appointment to appointment… CT scans, small procedure to put two tiny metal markers into the lumps(to check where they are for when they shrink🤞), bone scans 40 miles away at a diferent hospital, back again and we find out at least it hasn’t spread to her lymph nodes which is good news.
So treatment plan is she has had a PICC line fitted last Tuesday and starts chemo this coming Thursday…12 weeks of weekly chemo, then 12 weeks of 3 weekly, then hopefully it will have shrunk and then surgery to remove what’s left and then another 6 months of chemo as a preventative.
So my running plans have gone a bit haphazard. I run when I can and it helps with MY mental state.and I am trying to fit my Pilates in too which also calms me down. But obviously it’s fitting it round everything else. Luckily I’m retired so I can ferry her about to all her appointments . And it’s played havoc with my sleep patterns, which are usually pretty rubbish anyway, but I’m trying to be kind to myself too so I am strong enough to be there for her.
So onwards and upwards and I finally woke at a decent time today and managed a really great feeling run with one of my best times in years so that was good!! So hopefully I shall be back here with my running again. And reading your posts always cheer me up so it will be my happy place
sorry to be doom and gloom but just a reminder ladies “ check regularly and go for your mammograms when they are offered”.
Oh and on Easter Monday watch our insane friend Louise Butcher on This Morning “ The Topless Runner”. She ran the Virtual London Marathon 4 days after HER last bout of radiotherapy after HER cancer. And is as mad as a box of frogs. But she has been a great support to my daughter ( who met her 20 years ago when they did their music tech degrees together). And they’ve been great friends ever since
