Giving up work

Does anyone else not work due to depression and anxiety? Just wondered how you go about it and if it’s hard to prove?

Thank you.

Hi Emma,Thank you for your post. I am not working at the moment due to depression and considering my options to retire.

My doctor has provided certificates for long sick leave. After 8 months off, I want to see if I can do part time. If not, I will sail off into the sunset. I don't have to prove I can do it to anyone.

I am in Australia so the retirement process will look different to yours.

The thing we have in common is that leaving the workforce is one of life's biggest challenges and needs to managed carefully otherwise we risk falling into bad / worse mental health.

For so long, being in the workforce has been part of our identity and a source of income. Working also gives structure to our day.

What I can do is:-

* talk through retirement stress with a therapist

*check my financial position with an accountant

* talk to work HR about any entitlements due to be paid out

* see if I am eligible for any government support

* put together retirement timetables for pre and post retirement so I don't have to think too much which causes stress.

I will be reading as many retirement planning resources as I can find in the library or online.

Wishing you all the best for the next chapter in your life 🦘

I'm in the US so your rules are different I'm sure. I did leave my job due to my issues. Documentation and treatment are a big must here to get any help from insurance policies or the government

For me it wasn't a choice. I was too sick to preform my duties.

I am working now but part time and less stress.

Best of luck with your decision and the process.
