Propanolol
I'm on propanaol 80mg and they don't ale effect for a least a week or two to get into your system well everyone's different but that's wen I started to see a difference keep taking them they do wonders
It's a beta blockers so slows you down people are often prescribed it for fear of flying a lot of cardiac drugs can have side effects.just try and keep calm you will be ok 👌.
Hey I've just been prescribed them today my heart rate is way too fast the doctor said I have to take them! So far I've only taken one I have found it's made me feel a bit sleepy x
I’ve been taking propranolol for a year now and when I first started I was extremely nervous to take them and the first week or so was tough, but it got so much better and it’s been a life saver with my anxiety. Hang in there and know that your doctors know what they are doing!
Hi Kris when u say u found the first week or so was tough can u elaborate a little? I was prescribed them last year and literally felt like a zombie and stopped. I just couldn’t cope so I’d realky be interested to hear your experience to see if I should give them a go. Thanks so much.
Hi Will2015abc, How have you been doing these last several months? I noticed your other post regarding the blurry eyes. Will, that's an everyday thing for me. Eyes tested okay short of being dry. I do notice when I am more stressed or when I'm at doctor's office, it gets worse. It's like looking through steam, hazy. The minute I can relax again, it's gone. It comes and goes and is a part of anxiety.
As for the propranolol, my input is at the time I was put on it, my b/p was low which only made it lower when I took the medication. After one week, I was taken off it. Ironically years later, I'm on b/p medication of a different kind because my pressure had gone up because of anxiety/agoraphobia. It's a good drug that works for many. Depends on dosage, but your doctor is the best judge of what is best for you.
Take care of yourself Will. It's nice to see you back but hope you feel better.
Ah thanks so much Agora. Yes the blurry vision is more annoying than anything but as you know with anxiety anything "wrong" and anxiety goes through roof (even if its CAUSED by the anxiety!) Since my mum passed I seem to have a new symptom everyday.
Thanks again.W
It takes time Will, I know how very difficult this has been for you. Emotional pain takes time in healing. We have to allow ourselves to grieve in our own way, in our own time. There's no rush, your mom will always be a big part of your life, watching over you. Continue using the tools you learned in helping yourself with the symptoms that will creep up every day. It's just a test our mind gives us. You know that the more you fear it, the more anxiety wins. Come on the forum whenever you need a little support or comfort. We care. x
Thank you Agora for a lovely response. Yes its been so tough and it seems moreso now than before. I suppose the shock has worn off and people are back to their own lives. I even had someone say "I thought you were passed that" which enraged and upset me. I guess its hard enough coping with such a huge loss (She was everything to me) but to have anxiety disorder etc on top of that, well its just no fun at all. Thanks again, so much. W
Hey will, sorry to take so long to get back to you. I realized I had expectations of the medicine, I believed it would be terrible and it was. Light headed, chest discomfort, dizziness, and tight pressures all around my head. Now after a week I told myself look I’m still here and I haven’t died from the medicine yet. ( I had a huge belief the medicine would kill me). As I learned this, each day I took it the symptoms got better until they were completely gone.
Now I’ve been on propranolol for a year and 3 months now. This drug has saved my life. I wasn’t able to leave the house because of constant fear of panic attack’s, I always thought of my heart in ever situation and was afraid to exercise. (I have SVT, high heart rates randomly, cause of anxiety). With propranolol I no longer feel palpitations and I started exercising. With the medicine taking the edge off of the panic, I am meditating every day and learning to cope with the anxiety.
The medicine does not take away anxiety. It takes away the body’s physical response to anxiety making it much easier to cope. it IS so important to continue to work with your anxiety, learn it’s behavior in situations and learn to handle it while on the medicine. The more you practice the better you’ll get and you’ll gain confidence in yourself. After that you can slowly wean off the propranolol and when you’re off you will still have the effective means to cope and will have made anxiety a friend not a foe!
Thanks for the reply. It sounds so wonderful that it’s working for you and I’m really delighted you have found relief and a new lease of life. Unfortunately in my case my BP has always been on the low side and I think that’s where the problem lies for me. I simply couldn’t function on them and had to stop taking them. And I’d heard such success stories I was very keen to work with the med. but I’m truly delighted it has improved your quality of life. Long may it continue👍👍
I have been on and off propanalol for 5yrs now (now I only take them on extreme anxiety days when I'm sick and dizzy with it) but I found I got an effect from the first tablet tbh... Because they are beta blockers they help take the pounding heart feeling away for me, but sometimes about 30mins after taking them I get tingly hands and ringing ears (not badly, I can still function, it just feels weird) but that only lasts about 10 mins while I'm metabolising it (I'm guessing that's what's happening!) I do swing from low to high blood pressure tho so it might be that you're blood pressure was actually lower than normal so you got a strong effect from it? Also if it's brand new to your system it will take a little while to adjust... Don't worry if you feel a little strange as long as it doesn't last more than a couple of days... Also if you're on ADs there will be some initial interaction that your body will adjust to quickly....I hope this was helpful! I've found the Dr isn't always helpful with side effect feedback (maybe just mine) but don't let that put you off medications...this website has the best info I have found anywhere... It's from real ppl who actually live it and we all need to get through this together! I'm always here if you have anymore questions xx
