Propanolol: How safe is it?

I have anxiety on and off, my doctor had me on a mild dose of xanax, short term, and has changed me to propanolol 20 mg bid prn, to take 1 hour before an event. I do have problems with going out to certain events but also have moderate anxiety during the day. Will propanolol help with this too, and how safe is it ?

Hi, you are asking good questions about this drug.

They could be answered by the doc who put you on them.

Develop a good relationship with that doc so if problems come up in the future you will have a reliable source who knows you.

With that said, this drug has been around for a very long time. It is used successfully for performance anxiety, public speaking and PTSD , too.

I have used it on and off for years and for me it was a life saver.

Never once had any side effects.

All the best.

Hi bud propananol are perfectly safe to take I have been prescribed 160mg and have been taking them for over 10years one every morning, Though I was told they don't work instantly so taking them as and when you feel panicky is daft, anxiety is a constant feeling so needs to be treated constantly. You do need to have your blood pressure checked regularly as these can lower it they are widely used to control blood pressure with doses upto 320mg, hope this helps

Madmin1,

I have a question. I suffer from severe anxiety. Body trembles/shakes daily, clammy sweats, nausea, head never feels right, etc.

My general practitioner felt it was anxiety, but sent me to a neurologist because of the tremors. The neurologist did an MRI of my brain and everything came back normal/clear. He prescribed me Propranolol 60 mg for the tremors.

Here is my fear.........my blood pressure is always good (normally 119/74), so I am afraid to take the Propranolol because I am afraid it will lower my already good blood pressure to unsafe levels. Is my fear rational?

Thank you for the quick reply. Was you blood pressure normal when you started taking the propranolol or did it run high prior to starting the medication?

Thankfully, I do have a blood pressure monitor. It's weird, because my blood pressure stays normal, but my pulse rate can become elevated (up to slightly over 100 beats per minute).

My blood pressure was normal when I started it back in 2008 and still normal now I feel relaxed more for taking it too, your pulse rate probably rises when you get panicky mine used to, to a point where my whole body started to shake back then I avoided situations and people wherever and whenever possible but since taking propananol I can be myself my confidence grew and I'm happy just wish I got diagnosed a lot earlier in life

Thank you so very much! You have helped me immensely. I am in a bad way right now. Just had to conduct a 90 minute meeting and I'm shaking like a leaf and my head feels way off!

My doctor prescribed them. He told me they are perfectly safe. They don’t build up in the system and are generally prescribed to regulate racing heart, so they can lower your blood pressure, and make you feel a bit drowsy.
