so, i know my session isnt hard now, but i am aware of how hard its gonna be. as a topper, mainataining my scores is really important. i have been feeling soooo anxious. ive prayed and it helps.i try not to get too tensed about it and just study nicely and smoothly, but i just cant seem to get all this tension and stress out of my head...im scared of how stressed ill be in the future and thats whats stressing me out now...what should i do? dont give me those professional tips like meditating and all...help me like an actual best friend would...please.

the thing is that i dont have anyone to talk to. i prayed a lot to help and it does but still that stress remains. all my friends are relaxed and my parents arent that understanding...i seriously am so stressed i cant even afford a therapist.

Can you offer a few more details? Are we talking undergraduate? Postgraduate study? Furthermore, what is a topper?

well, im in 8th grade. i know this might sound dumb but i have an obsession with grades. i cried so bad and was soooo stressed last year's exams. i think it's traumatized me. i have this problem of not being satisfied with my efforts until i work my butt off. i stayed up all night and all day. i was almost sick. well, at least i got the results i wanted. but still, i would never want to go through all of that ever again. i want to excel this year too but still keep myself happy, like all those toppers (overachievers) u see online that get highest grades while still keeping in touch with reality. i cant seem to do that. please help me out and even give me some academic tips to help. i think im having sudden panic attacks or outbursts of study stress. but its so painful and im a very sensitive and emotional person.

Okay, I’ve think I’ve been there and experienced all that and more. Thus, let me offer some insights based on experience.

Firstly, and you have probably heard this before, no matter how motivated or anxious you are, it all depends on how you perform on the day. Thus, you have to prepare on a number of levels. It is not just the content of your exams, it is also the mindset that you have. Thus, rather than getting too stressed, you need to strike a balance between study and developing the right mental outlook. Put differently, your brain box is not designed to always be ratcheted up for peak performance, For your own sake, please endeavor to turn down the settings on occasion.

Furthermore, without going into lots of whys and wherefores, you should remember that as you can neither change the past, nor predict the future, all you can be is the best you can be in the moment (during the exam). To wit, once the buzzer rings and the invigilator says, “put down your pencils,” move on with your life, with no regrets and no second guessing. What is done is done and cannot be changed.

Please also remember that the education setting is designed to be a marathon, over time you acquire a variety of knowledge and then are given insights regarding the contexts to which it can be applied. Obviously, concurrent to that plan, there needs to be time given to maintaining your noggin through both periods of self-love and rest. Likewise, try and find something that can periodically divert your attention away from your cramming, because beyond a certain time span, your mind will numb, and your attention will wander. To put that in easier language, beyond a certain point, the law of diminished returns comes into play.

Finally, the human experience unfortunately is not just a continuous series of successes. Thus, while not patronizing you, you need to also appreciate that hiccups will occur along the way. When such do happen, try to keep a sense of perspective.

I think here we can only go so far. If things are really that dire, you need to talk to somebody qualified about professional help. Perhaps a place to start would be your home room teacher or a school councilor.
