My mother has had a hard life and has some really toxic tendencies and has kind of physically abused my sister and mentally abused me. She also was a sufferer of physical abuse at the hands of my father. I took her to a therapist for her problems. But the therapist since day one is giving therapy free of cost but is kind of dictating our lives. Even after repeated requests she is not charging the relevant fees. She has kind of started to decide what we should or should not be doing. I myself went to her for a session and she disclosed some things that I told her about my mother in therapy to my mother in her session. I suspect this is unprofessional but since I don't have much experience in therapy. Am I wrong ?

Therapist rant
Its definitely wrong unless you have an agreement to be treated as a family or something
Although it was a family therapy I went for an individual session
And she has been giving unnecessary job offers and kind of dictating what we should be doing about careers or food or other things
We initially agreed for family therapy but I did go for an individual session
Claims to be and she is a lecturer at a reputed college. That is exactly why I had doubts that were we at fault here
Hi Starla!
Dictating or strongly directing patients to act in certain ways - unless someone is suicidal or homicidal - is not acceptable, ethical treatment in my opinion. It sounds controling and potentially damaging.
I would say that it is a good idea to follow your gut instinct.
There are excellent therapists and there are therapists who either are not skilled, lack boundaries or are outright abusive.
I wish you the best in your search for assistance.
