broken bones cerebellar ataxia 😩

Hi 😊firstly I hope you are well as can be expected 🥰 I was wondering if anyone could help or relate / shine a light on any reason why my recovery time is taking so long ….

Back in early may this year I was feeding my cats ( I have cerebellar ataxia by the way ) I turned to quickly lost by balance ended up on the floor the result being a broken tibia and fibula open reduction surgery and a halo fitted a week later I had long metal rods plates and screws put in my leg and ankle I am still unable to walk and my latest X-ray showed a non union of the ankle bones they have told me to walk on it in a boot but the pain is bad and my leg swells each time I do so has anyone else with c/a had similar prolonged healing difficulties? I feel quite alone with local hospitals as they don’t really know about ataxia I feel my family have been wonderful but I want to get back on my feet again

Kindest wishes Claire

Think about getting a second opinion from a larger, teaching hospital. I do have a relative who had a broken ankle, with plates and pins, and it took a very long time to heal. I think some sort of electrical stimulation was eventually used, which worked. I also have another friend who broke a leg and it basically took 2 years to heal. I don't mean to discourage you, but I would really be inclined to get a second opinion from a major hospital, even if it means some traveling. This is unfortunately easier done in the US. Not sure how you would handle it in the UK.

You might try working with a physical therapist to help you make more progress and lessen the pain. I'm also amazed at what kind of information/resources I find on youtube, you might do some research there about your situation.
