in 2015 i had many ect treatments. As can read in my bio, it caused many many years of complete memory loss and a learning disabilty which for example, let me with a 5th grade math level. I just started county college which i haven't been in 20 years. I'm in my 40s now. I'm trying so hard but not doing well with my anxiety, social anxiety and depression. I'm trying so hard but it doesnt seem to be enough. I don't want to withdraw. I want to try. I don't know how to control the anxiety and depression arising from school. It is also increasing my night terrors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your courage to return to school! Take every minute with a focus on the present moment. Dont allow yourself to think you can't but you can with Gods strength. You have the intelligence to learn no matter what grade level you are at. I have a friend who teaches at a local college and many of his new students are only reading at a 9th grade level. Take a deep breath and move forward at one step at a time. You CAN do it. Praying for strength for you today.🙏😍

thank you so much for the inspiring words

Maybe you could get some kind of tutor to help you. Keep trying, don’t give up. Remember that handing in something is better than nothing, even if it isn’t your best quality of work.

I happen to be 52 and I’m considering going back to college. I’m very close to completing my degree. I know it must be weird being in classes around much younger people. But it’s better to do it now than wait till you’re 60 or something like that. Everything is so computerized now. I still like to hand in paper copies of my work then just send it over the computer. It’s okay that you might be having some difficulties, I know how shock therapy can affect your memory. I never had it done, but I have bipolar disorder and I’ve been on tons of different medications. Just do the best you can.🙂

Kudos to you for returning to school while still not feeling great. Personally, I found the ECT helped alleviate some symptoms, but didn’t really deal with the depression. I tried ketamine and it’s worked wonders. I have a new lease on life. Maybe another treatment would help with your symptoms. I must admit that since the ECT I haven’t been as sharp either, so I’ve compensated by taking extra good notes at work and being overly organized. I’m using every trick in the book to be effective at my job. I also encourage my coworkers to not hesitate to point out mistakes if they see them, so that they can be corrected. That way I can think of new strategies to not make them again. A skilled tutor may be able to help you with learning strategies such as mnemonics. Good luck!

may i ask what ketamine is used for? Unfortunately,i would not attempt ect again. Its one of my biggest regrets but everyone is affected differently. Thank you for you input. I really appreciate it.

Ketamine is used to treat depression. While it’s success rate is lower (about 50%) than ECT, it has been a miracle for me. I feel better than I have for decades, and with no side effects. Others are having miraculous effects with psilocybin (magic mushrooms). Of course, I wouldn’t suggest trying either of these drugs without medical supervision. (It would be like treating physical pain yourself with heroin or other opiates….it would just end up in disaster.) talk to your psychiatrist. You may be able to get into a research study if you live in or near a larger centre and haven’t a lot of money. Ketamine treatment in particular, is very expensive. Good luck.

P.S. I entered university for the first time at age 38 with two children (ages 6 & 8) and depression/anxiety, and a whole lot of doubts. I graduated with a Masters Degree. You’ve got this.
