Hi Bill181,
Thank you for your post. 👍
You just reminded of the importance of seeing a mental health professional and the
importance of getting the match right.
You're after someone who will put you first and is considerate of the issues you're coming in with.
When you're dictating the essence of who you are to a stranger and paying them to help you, you expect some kind of connection, albeit professional.
A strong relationship between you and your psychologist, known as the therapeutic alliance is the biggest factors in determining the success of your therapy.
Feeling comfortable, understood and receiving feedback that makes you feel like you're on the right track are all signs indicating you're a good fit.
Your first session is usually about information gathering so don't expect too much "therapy". At the end of the session your psychologist should have:-
* asked you about your goals
* asked what you want to achieve
* outlined a clear treatment plan
* given you a follow up appointment
Please remember, finding the right psychologist is a bit like app dating. You hope it'll be a good match, but sometimes you're left disappointed.
Should you go on a second date?
Tapping into how the session made you feel will help you decide whether you've found a beneficial match. Ask yourself 3 questions:
1. did you like her?
2. can she relate to you?
3. do you get along?
If you feel like you didn't get anything out of the session it's important to inform your psychologist.
Feedback is crucial and can assist your psychologist to adjust her approach in helping you.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Your mental health is worth it. 🦘
I have had my share of therapists in the past that have *ahem* "run out of ideas" to fix me, and tried turning the tables by saying that it's my fault.
Here's the deal. There are some therapists that are out there looking to make a quick buck off of easy patients. (AKA easy patients that have mild anxiety or depression)
& It's a shame that when they run out of ideas, that they try turning the tables on the patient, because the patient is a little bit harder than what they want to deal with.
I would much rather have a therapist tell me tat they simply ran out of ideas, then try putting the blame back at me, because (to me) that's kinda harmful to the patient.
JMO.

I'm sorry that happened to you, but you are in a good place here in the mean time, until you decide if you want to try a different therapist.
