Today was the day to start my full pill of lexapro. About 30 to 40 min after taking it I went it to full freak out mode tremors that didn't stop for hours, crying and my chest hurt so bad. My boyfriend drove me to the e.r. after 30min of not being able to function it felt like my mind was slipping. They did blood tests and gave me some lorazepam. Diagnosis, serotonin syndrome. So its going to be another few years before I work up enough courage to try another ssri. Feeling very defeated 😕

I am so truly sorry that happened to you. I can see how this has set you back now.

We are all so different in how we respond to medication. You are safe now in the ER.

I wish you a quick recovery physically. I know emotionally it's going to take some time.

Thank you for sharing your experience. :) xx

I’m so glad you got to the ER, hope they are taking good care of you. What an experience, I’m sorry you had to go through all that. I hope you have a smooth recovery!

I also had a bad experience with lexapro after taking it only one time. Its interesting that their claiming its serotonin syndrome. Did they give any explanation for that diagnosis. There is some studies that point to some people having to high serotonin naturally and not too low , which is the conventional wisdom. i think it was mainly related to social anxiety.

This same thing happened to me once when I tried Effexor for the first time.

It was so scary! My pupils were so big and I felt like I was having a panic attack that would never stop.

After spending about 2 full hours that way they finally gave me a Xanax and within about 10 minutes my pupils went back to normal and I was fine.

They didn’t have any specific name for it and they pretty much just told me I had a bad reaction to it.

It was definitely one of the scariest things I have ever been through and it did make me super nervous after that to try any meds that I had never taken before. Eventually I did of course, and so far I have never had anything like that happen to me again.

So sorry you had to experience this. I’m glad you are doing better now and you are somewhere that they can help you.

Just wanted you to know that I can totally relate and I know exactly how frightening this can be! Hopefully you will be like me and never have to go through anything like this ever again!

Hugs and Best Wishes 💙

You have social anxiety listed as a condition, it would be interesting to know if the op has social anxiety as well. What medication did you find that was helpful for you?

Serotonin syndrome symptoms usually occur within several hours of taking a new drug or increasing the dose of a drug you're already taking.

Signs and symptoms include:

Agitation or restlessness

Confusion

Rapid heart rate and high blood pressure

Dilated pupils

Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles

Muscle rigidity

Heavy sweating

Diarrhea

Headache

Shivering

Goose bumps

I started taking lexapro it was a half for 5 days then a full pill. The doctor said it was because of the change in doses.

I think alot of us on here have had a bad reaction to medication at one time or another. That being said I hope that you continue to feel better and find a medicine that works for you. It took many years for doctors to finally find a combination of drugs that helped with my symptoms. Speedy recovery and I hope that you have a lovely Christmas 💜

Having endured anxiety and panic for 48 years, I can say with certainty that I am hyper aware of any change in feeling (anticipating and dreading a panic attack of course). I tend to be very edgy when taking anything that can alter my mood. Possibly, the change in mood with the increased dose triggered anxiety?

Sorry to hear about that. I also do not trust ssri anymore , I have friend who have had great results from them . I only took lexapro for 2 days at half dosage and I ended up in the ER because I didn't sleep for 2 days. It took me about 2 weeks to feel " normal" after that. I've also been on lorazapam too. It def calm me down when I had to take it 6 years ago, but it loses its potency in the body after your 5th doze. I wish you the best ! You will recover! I believe in you!

Omg the sleep is still not normal I would just lay there till I passed out. Its so nice to hear that its not only me out there with all this going on.

You are never alone! Don't even thing for one second you don't have a whole community that can help you or support you when you need it. :) ( i know, I sound aggressive, but that's cuz I'm very passionate about other people feeling loved and supported!)
