Medical Marijuana for anxiety, where to start?

I have major clinical depression and anxiety, so says my medical charts since a very long time ago. Like some here, I've been on just about everything and then some. It works for me which is obviously good but as you know, there are no free lunches, there are side effects. Given the depth and extent of my Dep & Anx, I live with the side effects as it's by far, a much better choice, the only choice for me. For many people who are in in the beginning stages of depression or anxiety meaning, those new to this rather difficult journey, I would caution them not to jump into anything without doing some research inclusive of this forum. I could go on forever about doctors prescribing meds like it's candy, as if those taking it will one day say, "I'm all better now" and stop taking it. But we know this doesn't happen which means you have half the population on this stuff and many unnecessarily so. And it's bad. withdrawal.theinnercompass....

I'm writing this because I have children, a couple in their late teens. I'm tempted to go on a rant to tell people that, if you think the medical field is completely in the dark ages as far as mental health is concerned, like I do, it's even worse for children. I've been through a bit thus far with one of my children and so far, he's managing things very well, without meds. Another child of mine has anxiety, like lots of folks and he's in college. We talk very freely and candidly and his anxiety is getting to him, so much so that he's losing a little weight and is a bit too thin. He's doing well in school and at his school sport but he needs help. If he went to a Dr near his school, he would most likely be prescribed something. Interesting thing is, before he even spoke to me about this, one of his friends talked him out of going in that, he would be prescribed something which can be a life changing. Anyway, one of the things he said really helps is smoking a tiny bit of weed perhaps 3 or 4 times per week. We're not talking about taking massive bong hits and putting on some Hendrix but rather half a blunt/joint. I read in one of the posts that a certain strain is most likely better for settling someone down and relaxing them than another which might energize them. Anyway, I will most likely take him to his regular Dr here who has a long and good history with my children. Before I do so however, I would appreciate it if others could share any insight, what the Dr might say, what to ask, does it matter what state we're in, etc. Thanks in advance for anything you care to share. Oh and, I have all the confidence in the world that medical marijuana is the lesser of two, not so evil, evils.

I whole heartedly believe in herbal medicine. And yes....there are strains now that have been bred for specific intentions such as for anxiety, depression, etc. In the old days you just got what ever and it could even induce paranoia which was really bad. But with a doctor’s prescription card and rational professional advice on which strain would be best suited for your condition, whether is for nausea from chemo, migraines, or anxiety. I am personally in recovery and many of my peers would shun me for saying I agree with medical marijuana....but I don't see it as any different than ginger for nausea, or peppermint for gas, or chamomile to help you sleep. I'm sure some doctors won't agree with this course of treatment, but smart ones would. Big pharma isn't profiting and many doctors don't like the idea of an herbal replacing expensive drugs.

I also agree with medicinal marijuana, if prescribed, for recovering people. Probably better than a Valium. But “as prescribed” is the watchword and hyper vigilance is required. IMHO.

I agree, As a doctor prescribes is paramount and if you have any issues with addiction, it's always wise to inform your doctor. When I smoked pot back int the day, I never had a feeling or compulsion to do so. I could take it or leave it. But alcohol and some known addictive drugs....that was another story.

Thanks very much to everyone who responded, I appreciate the insight and opinions. I will take him to his regular Dr. I wasn't sure how the medical community views this. I do know, however, that I know a hell of alot more about the effects of psychiatric medication first hand and from many others and that it is indeed uncommon for someone to be on meds temporarily so the idea that my son would eventually stop taking it is hogwash. I also know first hand and from many others experiences that smoking weed is easily stopped, at least more so than meds.

I am indeed very lucky I can speak freely with my children. I could never do this with my parents so I made sure that I always talked WITH my children rather than TO them. Also, I made sure never to appear or respond like I was shocked by something they told me as I always hated this when trying to talk with my parents. I was just as afraid of their reactions as any consequences. So I'm very pragmatic though inside it may sometimes be alot more challenging. It's certainly not easy but I appreciate the results.

Thanks again everyone, I can always count on this forum which is quite amazing I think.

I find it wonderful that you have such and open relationship with your kids.

Some kids can't talk to their parents about these issues.

I have a daughter on a low dose anti anxiety Med. We talked about her anxiety from a young age. In college she discussed it with her md. I felt so good when the med kicked in. She said every night when her head hit the pillow her mind would start racing. She thought that happened to everyone and was glad it went away.

Open communication helps young people.

When you go to the md be honest. That's all you can do. Listen to what they say and take it from there.
