Scared to take Wellbutrin.

Hi, and thank you for reading this. I suffer with depression/anxiety, sometimes depression severe, sometimes anxiety severe.

So I’m taking Paxil and abilify at night. Was taking adderral in morning for motivation for my depression but then adderral was producing severe panic attacks.

Now doc wants me to stop adderral and take Wellbutrin plus my other meds. But why can’t I just stop adderral and not take any more drugs. In the past I didn’t take so much meds. Got severe post partum depression but doing good now except for anxiety. Daughter is 6 months now.

I’m scared to take Wellbutrin. Don’t want to feel more drugged side effect.

Please support.

I have major depression, but haven't struggled much with anxiety. Wellbutrin has been my favorite antidepressant. I have taken it for almost 20 years. But I am no doctor. I just wanted to give you the experience of one person.

HI!!!

I was very afraid of taking any medications for depression, PTSD, chronic anxiety, and major panic attacks. I have started reacting out, and I am learning that there are a great deal of folks that have the same fear that you and I share!!! I was placed on wellbutrin in 2012, and took it for major 4 months, and one day had a uncontrolled panic attack... at a football campus!!! I was coaching the Defense backs, and just froze in the middle of 40 high school boys doing a drill!!! It was God awful...lol!!! I blamed my new meds.... wellbutrin for this "out of body experience." I never told my doctor I have taken myself off, and kept it a secret for years!!! It wasn't until I got a really great therapist, who knew me from the news about my daughter being murdered by her ex-boyfriend. After a few months of sessions, he told me that I was not using my medication correctly, without me confessing I wasn't!!! Anyway, he got me back on them, and helped me understand how they work, and there is no worry or fear of harmful effects, other than overuse. There are some wonderful folks who can also give you the needed support concerning any fear or confusion about medications. Wellbutrin does help, and may God Continue to Bless You!!!

I would speak to your doctor about your fears which I can relate to over medication. Why don't you suggest that you stop taking the adderral and see if you can manage without taking the wellbutrin. Then if you find that you are still unwell you could then add on the wellbutrin.

That’s true but once I tried stopping adderral and felt very depressed. But I could try again.

I started Wellbutrin 3 weeks ago. I don’t know how I feel about it yet. I’m on a low dose (75mg) in the morning. I have had poor sleep since January due to anxiety. I’m taking Gabapentin for sleep and I guess anxiety. I just started sleeping better. I wake up at 8 am and take the Wellbutrin and I feel like it gives me energy like a cup of coffee but that’s it. I was scared to take so many drugs too. I was also prescribed buspar for anxiety but I took it a few times and i think it made me feel crappy so I stopped.

Oh and I also have depression. So that’s why I’m on Wellbutrin.

I have issues (anxiety) with taking medications including antibiotics. We can talk ourselves out of taking anything if we think about side effects and when you already have anxiety and/or depression, it’s hard to tell what feeling (mental and/physical) belongs to what.

If you are apprehensive at all, it’s important to be honest with your doctor because it keeps your dialogue open and honest between you both. We are our own advocates and if you would like to try a certain medication regimen, discussing the pros and cons can help you and your doctor come up with the best plan for you.

I don’t know if anyone has ever recommended it to you but you can find symptom trackers online and just print them out or just write one out on your own. It can seem overwhelming and even annoying to do so but just keep it simple. This could help you see an improvement, decrease or increase in, and any new symptoms that may develop. Pinpointing anything that has changed or is going on during symptoms can aid in finding the right medications and dosages for you.

You’re certainly not alone with not wanting to have to take medication and feel the drugged effect. Medications are a catch 22 but when you find the right ones for you, it is certainly worth it.

I had horrible side effects while on Wellbutrin. The most serious one was severe chest pain; Everyone is different though. I am on Paxil now and other than it making me tired, no other side effects.
