Help please!

I live in the state of North Carolina. I got a ticket (my first ticket ever) and wanted to see if anyone here could help me with some questions I had. I have looked on line and can’t really find an answer. My insurance lapsed and I did not know we were getting notices in the mail about the penalty fee you have to pay at the dmv, when insurance laps or stops.

Well turns out that we didn’t know we were getting the penalty letters because we had moved and they were getting sent to another address. So long story short at the beginning of the year a cop pulls me over and says I’m going to have to revoke your license plate because you have no insurance on the vehicle. Mind y’all I had been paying my insurance monthly. So I said no insurance? And proceeded to tell him I pay my insurance monthly. He said some crap about he had to revoke the plate and that their must have been a lapse.

So I go back and forth with dmv and the insurance company and end up having to pay no fees because they were waived due to it being a mistake on behalf of the insurance. So now that I got everything handled and in order my question is I still have a ticket to deal with. So if I go to court on my court date which is the 28th of this month. Should I hire an attorney or just represent myself??? Help me someone please I feel like I shouldn’t have to pay for any of this because it was a mistake on the insurance company. Does anyone know? I already called a local lawyer and he said he charges $150 to get the case dismissed. Which I need because I don’t want points on my license for something that was not my fault and that also cost me my first ticket! 😡😡😡 my license was clean of violations points and anything else the record was clean. I’m not a cheap ass but if I don’t have to pay the $150 and can represent myself then I’d rather do that.

I'd pay the lawyer. They know how to fix these things. It will all work out.

It might be worth the money for attorney. I know some tickets get dismissed by showing judge you corrected the violation. Like a ticket for expired inspection, if you go with in a he days, you show judge and he usually dismisses. Be sure you have letters on letterhead, and all documentation, like receipts for your payments, communication with dmv n insurance company, etc. If you need a little time to get attorney, ask for a continuation, I think that's what it's called. You are allowed one. That gives you time to get your papers and such on order. Best of luck, how it works out for you!!

Hugs!!

My vote would be for you to hire an attorney. Going to court can feel overwhelming and stressful. His fee of $150 is very reasonable and will be well worth it.
