My boyfriend suffers from severe depression and anxiety. It has been 3 weeks now that he has been at his lowest. He doesn't want to see anyone and he will only communicate via email. He is taking medication and seeing a therapist. Should I continue to give him space? Is there a small gesture I can do that may distract him without overwhelming him? Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

Hiya sweetie just him knowing you are there and that you understand this is real and his suffering is real is enough. He’s getting help which is great, there will be darkness but light too. X

Hiya Optimistic! I am so sorry you and your significant other are going through this. Speaking as a guy who has been through a similar path, it can be a very vulnerable experience. And most guys have a hard time revealing their vulnerable sides. I know this can be extremely frustrating for you. The feeling of powerlessness as you see someone you love going through this. If I can offer any consolation, it's this. If you try to force him to open up to you before he's ready, you run the risk of pushing him away. Be supportive of him in his efforts to work through this. Give him encouragement and reassurance that you'll be there when he is ready to open up. Let him know it's ok to talk to you and let him know you won't think less of him for doing so. Above all, continue providing unconditional love. And always let him know he's not alone in this and you'll be by his side no matter what. We men have always been taught to face our problems alone. Just being there and letting him know that you care and support him can go a long way to easing him into sharing his vulnerable side. Plus, if you ever need to vent or share your concerns, we're all here for you! You, too, are not alone in this and we're here to support you as well! 😀

Sincerely,

Brian ☺

Thanks for the advice! I'm always telling him I'm here for him. It's hard when it's all over email only and that too once every week or two. I'll continue to let him know I'm here for him and give him space until he is ready.

Not a problem Optimistic :) Sometimes, we guys need reassurance. I know it's hard and I can truly sympathize. If you ever feel the need to vent or share, you can talk to me anytime.

Sincerely,

Brian :)
