Amitriptyline is an old-fashioned antidepressant (called a ‘Tricyclic’), now also used to treat nerve-related pain, migraines, pain after shingles, and sometimes insomnia. Although it’s effective for treating depression it’s more likely to cause side effects than newer ‘SSRI’ antidepressants (like Fluoxetine, or Prozac). When being used for pain it’s often prescribed in smaller doses than for depression.
