Hi. I used to be on 20mg amitriptyline about 10 years ago.It helped a bit. Doc has prescribed it again due to ongoing fibromyalgia pain and now migraines. I still think I have something auto immune going on but ANA bloods were negative.
I’m up at 6am most days so I’ll have to take it really early evening. Not good. My question is does anyone drink alcohol at all on this and can it make you gain weight? I’m trying to lose weight and it’s hard enough now. I’m not on any daily meds currently.
Thanks for taking time to reply.

Hello, does the leaflet in the box of tablets say anything about weight gain ? Have you looked the Amitriptyline up on the internet , I know some meds do cause weight gain for some, I did put on some when I started my duloxtene. It does normally tell you on the instructions about alcohol, I would always ask your doc/surgery too be 100% /sure . Yes it’s hard sometimes too keep the weight off for sure, we do our best , I loved too swim but now I have CFS as well I had too give it up . Was the best excercise for me personally. Take care x
Thanks for your reply. I’ve read that it can increase appetite and therefore weight gain and no alcohol until you are used to it and then in moderation. I don’t like committing to meds but really feel if I’m going to keep going with work etc I really need some help. So I think I’m going to try it at least x
Hi lovely I take Amitriptyline 100mg daily I've been on it for over 10 years it is the only thing that allows me to get any sleep at all.I put on a lot of weight but I take several other medicines so not sure if its a combination of all of them, one of the side affects is weight gain I have not found any increase in my appetite but I am also bed bound now due to chronic pain and several health issues aswell as fibro so that obviously adds to gaining weight
I don't drink alcohol now but when I did socially I never had a problem obviously I guess if you were to drink a lot the alcohol combined with the sedative effect of the Amitriptyline would increase that feeling but never had a problem having a few drinks in the past. Hope that helps a bit. Big hugs x
Hi, I'm a kind of Newbie to Amitriptyline as I've only been on it for a year when I got my Fibro diagnosed last October just 20mg and ,like you I have to be up for work between 5am and 6am so I take mine around 7pm. I havn't noticed any weight gain and I now manage to do some physio and a weekly swim so that may help with my weight. I'm not a big drinker but when I've had a couple of glasses of wine I have been fine . I also take a few supplements, Glucosamine and Collagen for my Osteoarthritis, and a few other medication for pain and all this is keeping me active and working.
hi I’m on 70 mg a night for years it is only thing that helps me with fibo pain im a very bad sleeper it doesn’t help me with sleep and also he has caused weight gain
