hi. My hairdresser tells me that hair growth goes through cycles and one of these is when the hair thins. I think it's called exogen when old hair sheds to make way for new hair growth. Medication can impact upon on these stages and certainly after my open heart surgeries my hair became very thin as my body directed its resources to wound healing. I'm on Dapa, warfarin, bisoprolol, duloxetine, entresto and levothyroxine and any of these could be responsible for hair loss. I'm also on spironolactone as part of my heart meds but Ive read that it can increase hair growth in relation to androgenetic alopecia. I take a vitamin b complex to try and counter hair thinning and my hair is now much thicker but, of course, that could simply be as a result of recovering from surgery. I should also say that I'm 53 so the menopause could also be a factor. I'm told that even if my hair thins as long as I don't have bald patches it should grow back. I try not to worry about it now but I do understand that it can be distressing.

Hi Awaiting, sadly, as we get older, hair does thin too. I'm not blaming my medication for thinning hair, but I'm blaming age. Take care.

After I started taking Ramipril and then Clopidogrel, I noticed a few more hairs than usual on my PC keyboard. Then I supplemented with Vit D and B12 and noticed an improvement. I briefly belonged to iron groups on Reddit and Facebook, where some of the female members with low iron and ferritin were worried about significant hair loss. I didn't stay very long in the groups, because nearly all the members had "female" problems and I'm a fella. It didn't help that I reported having an iron infusion when my iron and ferritin were far higher than theirs, with some of them complaining they had been refused infusions.

Have you had your B12 levels checked as if low can affect hair

I have been losing a lot of hair also. I spoke to my cardiologist who said it was due to the bisoprolol. I take zinc supplements which did help at first.

Hi. Yes my hair was very think and is definitely thinner. I wonder about the Apixaban and bisoprodol out of my many meds ? But I don’t know. I take the usual supplements now and just hope for the best. I’m always keen to see what has worked for others. I also now use thickening shampoo and conditioner, I am unsure if this does anything however it gives the illusion of thicker hair. I have read hair changes in three month cycles , so I always live in hope for improvement.

I've recently noticed exactly the same Awaiting. It's making me miserable!I'm wary of taking supplements in case of kidney damage.

I'm on Asprin,Lansoprazole,Bisoprolol,Isosorbide Mononitrate,Ramipril,Ezetimibie,

Rosuvastatin. I also had a head of thick hair, now it's gone very thin. I wondering if its more to do with age than medication. 🤗

Hello, I've experienced this following a heart attack at 48, put on the standard drugs including Bisoprolol. Basically I lost half of my hair, it was long and the bottom half became brittle, not as a result of heating products- I didn't use them. Hairdresser said it was side effects from medication. My hair became very lack lustre, just dull, very different texture.

I had my hair cut to above shoulder length and use a shampoo which has very few chemicals. Medication has now been reviewed and bisoprolol I only now take as and when required. What a difference now, hair is back to what it was pre heart attack.

I can only think it was due to the medication as I made no dietary changes in this time. I was really fit when it happened, ate clean, non drinker and smoker, daily walking of 5+ miles.

Hi I think it might be ramipril. my hair got a lot thinner when I first started taking a cocktail of medication. Then my heart failure nurse swapped ramipril for entresto and I noticed it grew thicker. Unfortunately my cardiologist put me back on ramipril and guess what? It started falling out again! For some reason he will not put his patients on entresto but I am going to insist he does so, next time I see him.My nurse said others patients have had the same problem.

OK10 profile image

I don't why doctors prescribe ramipril but i am told it is good for the liver and other organs as well.

MDR1 profile image
MDR1 in reply toOK10

Yeah I'm going to ask him at my next appointment, although I don't think entresto, the alternative I was put on, affects the liver or other organs.

My hair went super thin when I was on Ramipril. I had to be taken off it as I had life threatening side effects and my hair seemed to stop falling out. Then I was put on Clopidogrel after my valve replacement and it has started again.

Thank you for asking the question as this has happened to me I have been taking bisoprolol since August and have lost lots of my hair, I had wondered if it was “an age thing” but after reading so many replies have decided it must be the medication. The loss has slowed down now thank goodness

My sister had this problem with her blood pressure tablet. Her tablet was changed and the hair thickened. Sorry she can't remember which one it was

I’m on Dapa and bisoprolol from the ones you mentioned, and edoxaban instead of apixaban. I lost a lot of hair when I was on warfarin but since coming off it my hair is coming back. I’m almost 64 so the top isn’t as thick but it’s a lot better than it was.

I had the same for a year after my thrice HA. I was told that it wasn’t necessarily a single drug but could well be a combination of several - originally I was on about 12/14 a day.

However, once I came off Clopidogrel and Amiodarone, the hair loss stopped. I still get some hair clogging the shower, but I’d put that down to age rather than any particular drug and it is nowhere as near as much.

Alison_L profile image

Yes, it’s the Bisoprolol, but as your body gets used to the chemical, your hair will get back to normal xx

Petercat1 profile image

Hi.Don't think thats true as been taking Bisoprolol for nearly eight years and my hair is definitely thinning

I read the Ramipril leaflet and thinning hair is one of the side effects. I never had thick hair, but now it is getting even thinner - not good!

I was taking a statin, 20mg Atorvastatin, and my hair was falling out. The statin was reduced to 5mg and my hair stopped falling out. Maybe one of your drugs are too strong perhaps a chat with your GP is due. Best wishes.

Besides many other side effects, beta-blockers are associated with hair loss. Whilst I am back on them from last year I took them for 3 months 25 years ago and lost loads of hair, when I stopped taking them so did the hair loss. Age and beta-blockers will certainly see of my remaining growth this time round though.☹️

I was taking a small dose of bisoprolol and noted thinning of the hair. Since stopped and hhk gx seem to have stabilised but not improved. Could be coincidental.

Yes, I was experiencing hair loss after a few months on Bisoprolol, my hairdresser noticed it too. I wondered if it was the medication because I couldn't think of anything else that it could be.In September I came off Bisoprolol and began taking Diltiazem and my hair is back to normal now.

my hair is thinning, been like it for years. (Male) under active thyroid, possible cause.

My wife is on meds and suffering hair loss . Been on meds for a TIA back in April 22.

Sorry to hear about hair loss. It's happening to me, same meds as everyone! After some research - now use rosemary hair tonic, twice a day - massaging into scalp. It slowed down the hair loss down.

All the best to you all.

Hi. That is happening to me as well. I have been taking ramipril for years and did not have much hair falling out. But after the operation i was prescribed lansoprazole and bisoprolol and others. One of these causing my hair to drop off but don"t know which one. I also take vitamins b12, b complex, c+zinc and d but they stop my hair falling off.

Hi, I have heart disease but I take a supplement called saw palmetto for my enlarged prostate. Not only does it make he pee better, but makes my hair grow at a pretty fast rate. Might be worth considering!

cabgpatch profile image
cabgpatch in reply toBlindbeggar83

A small word of caution regarding saw palmetto. It has anticoagulant properties, so might be advisable to talk to a doctor before using if on anticoagulants or anti-platelet drugs.

Reliable info on Bisoprolol shows that hair loss (alopecia) is one of the less common side effects: bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/bisop... the hair usually grows back when that medication is withdrawn. There may be an alternative you could take, as the prescribing doctor

I am sorry to hear about your hair, I have just recently noticed that I am loosing more hair and I am used to my hair being very fine but it is thining out too. I have always taken pride in my hair but it is now getting worse. I have always lost hair due to an underactive thyroid but this seems worse now and I put it down to all the heart medications. I often wonder if I will be better with a wig as my hair is so thin and messy now regardless of what I do with it. I can’t really advise any kind of treatment but fully understand how you feel. I feel quite embarrassed with the way my hair is and I am only 51 years old. I have only just recently noticed the change in it, so I do hope it improves in time. It is good to know I am not the only one to notice this. Good luck with finding a treatment that works for you

Mine has always been seriously thick it’s what my mum used to call my crowning glory now it’s so thin I can’t do anything with it. I’m horrified how bad it is

I feel exactly the same, I am really upset about my hair. My hair has always been lovely and now it is awful. I fully understand how you feel, I feel like getting a wig to cover it up, I feel so ashamed. I can’t do anything about my medication as I am on it all for life. Hope we manage to gain some advice from the forum. I am just glad I am not alone with the hair issue.
