I had a very traumatic experience in my peri menopause. Due to heavy bleeding and clotting in my last 2 years of peri menopause I was hospitalized with an anemia. Given tablets to help stem bleeding and they caused jaundice. Was offered hysteroscopy under NHS however not given the option for sedation. I refused and went privately. Without my consent a Mirena coil was placed inside of me to stem the bleeding. It did the job however at a great mental cost to myself. I did not realize I was intolerant to synthetic progesterone and it gave me insomnia, restless legs, crippling anxiety and panic attacks every 10 minutes. I was referred to the Crisis team and they gave me a lot of Olazapine and Diazapem. These drugs caused me restlessness and Akasthisia - leading to more psychotic episodes. I was eventually hospitalized.
The Mirena coil was removed however 6 months too late and I went catatonic. Eventually had ECT and recovered fully.
I was treated abominably during my perimenopause and sent off to mental hospitals. Some were mixed wards and it was so frightening. No one treated me holistically and no one admitted the Mirena coil was the cause.
Recovering and lots of therapy to help me with the most traumatic of experiences I went through. Contacted PALS and awaiting their aplology. Also the consultant that placed the coil into me has not replied to my messages. Disgraceful !
