My daughter is 14. She got her first period on 26th December but as of today 22nd Jan, she is still bleeding. Her doctor has prescribed tranxemic acid 1000mg thrice a day but the bleeding slows down but it is still there. Her iron and thyroid reports are clear. She is booked for a pelvic ultrasound in ten days but that is still a long time and then the wait for the results. I am getting very worried as to how we can stop the bleeding and what could be the underlying cause for this? Can someone please share any insight. I have been unable to sleep and I am not sure how long she can just sustain this bleeding without it affecting her health.

Prolonged first period

🙂 A first period can be a traumatic experience, and we all know experiences can be very different. While waiting for the appointment ..contact your GP if you need further peace of mind.
I found this link..
What to do if I have very heavy periods
We recommend you should eat a healthy and iron-rich diet and that you talk to your doctor as soon as possible. You may be given iron tablets to avoid anaemia and/or a medicine called Tranexamic acid for 3-5 days. You may be referred to a haematologist to check your blood clots properly.
How often should I get my periods?
For the first 18-24 months, you might not have a period every month, it may be delayed by a few days, but you could also miss a few months. Sometimes you can also get more than one period a month. Periods usually become more regular after 2 years, when you should expect a period every 25-35 days. It is useful to keep track of the days of your periods by recording them on an app.
Different apps are available now, in which you can plot the days, the flow, and any other symptoms such as mood changes or tummy pain that you get during your periods.

But is 30 days (and ongoing) normal for a first period? Or does my daughter have some disorder? I don’t know what to do.
🤔As someone else has mentioned…this is commonly linked to hormones. It’s natural to be concerned when it appears to be ‘not the norm’ for someone experiencing their first period but….because your GP has followed up, and made a referral, unless your daughter shows signs of becoming unwell (in which case ring 111) it will be a case of trying not to overthink until the upcoming appointment.
Hi worried mother
It can be so difficult when they start their periods, maybe ask if you can try an alternative to tranxemic acid, or up how many she can take. Hopefully it’s just her hormones are out of kilter and should settle. My daughter had very heavy long periods when she was in the early years of her periods. And would bleed through pads within 30 mins, she was lucky and used tranxemic acid which she would start on the first day of her period which helped. She is now many years later on the mini pill to stop her periods and she has regular breaks of about 6 months to give her body a reset
Did your daughter ever bleed 30 days straight? Everyone is telling me that is not normal for a first period. The doctor has also asked for a pelvic ultrasound. My worry is - could there be something wrong with her? Could it be something dangerous? She is only 14 - my mind is going in all directions -
my cousin daughter is the same but they haven’t had much help from the doctor other than going on the pill. I don’t think her mum wanted this. It is such a worry hopefully it is just hormone based, and nothing will show up. Sending positive thoughts your way 🙂
