I've had the mirena coil fitted for just over a month and I've been suffering a bit with it. I have been experiencing quite severe cramping pretty much since I had it fitted and I have been taking naproxen and codine, as these are the only painkillers that work for me. I have also been spotting since a week after I had it fitted. During the past week I have also noticed that it has drastically altered my mood. I have become very irritable and my mood changes a lot, which is something my partner has also noticed. It also seems to have decreased my sex drive.
Before this, I tried the copper coil, and this worked out fine for about 6 months. However, it started to cause me really bad pain and the bleeding was getting too heavy for me, so I decided to have it removed. Before that I was on several different pills over the course of two years and all of these seemed to impact my mood and sex drive.
Would anyone be able to tell me if the effects the mirena coil is having on me will settle down at all or is this what it is going to be like? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am struggling quite a lot and I don't really know where to turn with birth control if this doesn't work out for me.
Thank you

Hi yellowstar - sorry you have felt so rough lately. I had a Mirena coil fitted last year, and I'm still not certain if I made the right decision. The cramping settled relatively quickly, but low mood, low libido and weight gain have dogged me since. The coil fitting coincided with the onset of peri-menopause so it's hard for me to be objective about the coil's specific effects - and like you - I'm struggling to find a viable alternative, so will stick with it for the time being. Wishing you lots of luck with whatever you decide x
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been feeling that way too those are definitely all side effects associated with hormonal birth control. As I said, I’ve experienced on both the pill and the mirena coil.
I’m thinking about getting it removed and maybe trying the copper one again. I’ve read that each time you have a coil, the experience can be different.
Unfortunately it sounds like it’s the IUD. I’ve also tried 4 different birth control pills & they make me depressed, very depressed. My doctor doesn’t recommend the Mirena for me because of this & I can’t try the copper one because my periods are so long & heavy. The only thing I can rely on is a spermicide & condoms. Which makes it worse is my periods are irregular going from 32-39 days usually. Well, now I’m on day 43....I’ve done 2 pregnancy tests this week just to make sure I’m not pregnant....I wish there were more options for those of us who cannot take hormones because it’s a pretty common problem.
Yeah I’ve come to the conclusion that I just don’t get along with hormonal birth control, which sucks because it doesn’t really leave me with many options.
I’m sorry to hear that you don’t seem to get along with hormonal birth control either and that you’re experiencing some pretty nasty side effects
