How old are you as if you are over 40 you don't need a blood test to diagnose perimenopause it is diagnosed on signs and symptoms.
The reason for this is perimenopause is when your estrogen and other hormones involved in reproduction levels fluctuate, so blood tests will not pick up that you are in it.
Don't worry too much, many women find this happens as they go through perimenopause in their 40's. My periods got very, very heavy with lots of clots after the age of 38. By age 44 I started to get other symptoms of perimenopause - whacky cycles, hot flushes, night sweats. Do speak with your GP. Also have a look at the Balance app by Dr. Louise Newsom - loads of info on peri and menopause.
Thank you so much, really helps and puts my mind as rest when others have been in the same boat. As I deal with anxiety as well plus I’m a carer for my mum and have 3 young kids I need to be on top of it
Can I kindly ask sorry if it’s personal pls excuse me… when you had clots was it lots and big? Also does perimenopause come before premenopausal then menopausal is that the steps as such
Not too personal at all, very happy to give my experience 😊 My clots at times look like pieces of skin (you could stretch them thin!) up to 5cm in length, other times lumps of blood about 3cm in diameter. I would get around 5 per period. I actually became anemic as at times I was getting 2 of these heavy bleeds back to back. It was awful but I became used to it, having to change tampons every 1.5 hours for the first 2 days and wearing a pad and period knickers at night to try to get through.
I now take tranexamic acid for the first 2 days of bleeding which reduces the flow considerably, for me this works really well but I know for others it hasn't. I have also sorted my low iron but that has taken months of supplementation. I am now on HRT - not a miracle cure but I'm now regular, with one bleed per month, no hot flushes and only the odd night sweat.
Premenopause - perimenopause - menopause. That's the order. Premenopause is before you begin any changes at all. Perimenopause is when the first hormonal changes begin but you still have a cycle and can last a few years. Menopause is the day you have been without a period for a year.
Awwww this has been excellent thank you so much for your help and advice means so much. When I speak to my doctor on Tuesday I will ask about the tablets for periods and I’ll write down my symptoms before I speak to them. This has been a real help thanks a million
