Struggling with weight loss

I am just trying to decide whether to rejoin the Slimming World group under the new Covid 19 restrictions or go it alone with some support. Lost 2 stone with SW but gained 7 pounds during 'shielding'

Hi Lundy67, well done on your 2st loss!

Personally, I find that any form of 'diet' where I have to restrict my eating makes me just go wild as soon as I hit a weight loss plateau or anything to put me off happens. In short, for me it's not sustainable and I soon creep up again. Instead, I am now trying to completely change my eating habits for good which although seems daunting hopefully will get me off my weight loss/weight gain roller-coaster and finally give me some long term changes.

Of course, we are all different and it depends on your views and many other things. Maybe if you have had success there before it's worth a shot. Please may I ask what is it that makes you doubt joining SW again?

Lundy67 in reply toHumblebee

Hi Humblebee, it's not joining SW that's worrying me but I'm concerned about being in a 'meeting situation' having just come out of over 4 months of 'shielding' due to health reasons. Reading a general SW email I received you have to take hand sanitiser, wipes to clean your own chair before and afterwards, be weighed in your shoes, just wondering if it's worth the risk at present even though I have now 3.5 stone to lose.

Oh I see, sorry for my misunderstanding. I am new to this site but have found the members to be very supportive so far. I do think it is likely to be a different type of support than that received at SW though, in that you do not see people face to face. So, I suppose it depends on how you feel about that. 😊

Lundy67 in reply toHumblebee

Well I haven't attended the SW meetings since 3rd March, then I was unwell and then the groups closed. I have texted my weight to my leader over the past 4 weeks but obviously not the same as you get from talking to others in the 'same boat' so to speak. I didn't gain any weight to start with but now have put back on about 7Ib. I talked to the leader and she is not expecting anyone to stay to these 'meetings' just walk through and get weighed and take your money. I've decided to use Health Unlocked for support and go it alone and see how I get on.

Humblebee profile image
Humblebee in reply toLundy67

I see, not really the same thing just being weighed and leaving. I can understand not wanting to do that. I have gained a lot over lockdown, it was just too easy with not going anywhere. I wish you good luck with trying it, but don't feel like you're alone. If you want then reach out to me at any time to have a chat about things 😊

Yes, I'll weigh myself on Monday 10th and confess all, I weighed 15 stone 13.5 lbs when I joined SW and now on my scales last week 14 stone 6.75 lbs, (very precise my new scales).

I am going to do my first weigh in on Monday too, so I'll 'see' you there!

its really the 'take your money i object too. I was a SW member for a number of years until September 2019 when I decided they had had enough of my money ans I felt like I wasn't getting the support. Joined a gym and began eating better then lockdown happened. I discovered this forum in June and its more than helped me, the fact that its not ' face to face ' actually helps me as I feel i can be 100% honest, both with myself and my fellow forum members x

You have done well on your diet up until now, I think it is a good thing that you have arrived at this Forum. You have all you need to continue on the SW diet, your own scales and you will get all the support you need on here. What's not to like? You will also have no worries about Covid. Well done and welcome to the site. Plus you will save more than the class fees of course! :-)

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toBrynGlas

Yes, I can treat myself with the money I save.

BrynGlas profile image
BrynGlas in reply toLundy67

You sure can. Plus you have all the info you need now anyway. I liked the older versions of SW but there is too much free foods on there, or at least there was, too many free foods, when I rejoined but in 3 weeks I was gaining and of course that was because of my thyroid problems. But I don't see how you can eat as much as you want and still lose weight, that was what I thought about it at the last try.

When I was weighed and had gained I was sort of segregated from the other members in a way, so that the leader could show me (privately) the error of my ways. I never went back after the 3rd weigh in.

If you like the diet and it's working save your money and weigh at home where you are happiest and feel safer.

Rather depends on how effective you have found the SW model in the past, I guess. 😄

Many people have and do follow their methods. Many others have concerns about their weight loss model.

What will help your decision, Lundy67 , as you are asking? 😊

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toSofaJockey

Not sure, I think I'll call the leader and ask how these meetings are being conducted.

SofaJockey profile image
SofaJockey in reply toLundy67

I was thinking more of the weight-loss methodology to be fair. 😎 Meeting other people face-to-face never did much for me. It may for you. 🤔

Lundy67 profile image

Looks like a just walk through and weigh in and pay your money, not for me at present.

Welcome back, Lundy67 :)

Maybe these would help and the plan be more sustainable? healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and healthunlocked.com/api/redi...

All of the information you need about the forum can be found in Pinned Posts healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... and I hope you'll be joining all the Events, Challenges and Clubs that we run, especially a weigh-in and the daily diary.

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour=true

We've found active participation to be key to successful weight loss and, of course, it's a good way to get to know people, find inspiration and share support and encouragement.

Wishing you all the best :)

Hi Moreless, the main reason for losing 5 stone was the fact I was diagnosed with being pre-diabetic so I know it makes sense. When I had lost the 2 stone my doctor said he felt I had lost enough but I felt I could do better, then we landed up being locked down.

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply toLundy67

If you're diabetic, then just losing weight isn't enough, you need to reduce the amount of carbs you eat. Here are some more things for you to check out, because my understanding of the SW diet is that it's low fat high carb.

I was pre diabetic too which is why I was given 12 weeks free with SW. A friend of mine who is also doing SW and is diabetic has managed to loose weight and lower her medication. I have gone from pre diabetic in October 2019 to not pre diabetic as of July (well, actually I was told I was no longer pre diabetic as of December but I wasn't told that! ) so, I know it works for the condition, My level was 46 which is very close to diabetic and now it's 39. Another woman in my group has been at target for 11 months and is also no longer pre diabetic. Pre diabetic to me is a wake up call to change habits and I feel that is what I have managed to do.

It is your choice if you decide you don't want to return to group but for me, I know the support has been absolutely gold to me.

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toBee-bop

Yes I too got the 12 weeks free with the NHS, been doing countdown since, 12 weeks for the price of 10, to keep the cost down. My doctor thought the 2 stone I lost was enough but I won't to get down a lot more, 5 stone in all!

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply toLundy67

Ah, ok. 2 stone is amazing though! For me I just wanted to get into a healthy BMI and not be pre diabetic. How are you doing with your BMI?

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toBee-bop

33.8 according to the NHS website, far too high!

Bee-bop profile image

Is that before or after your 2 stone loss? Are you sticking with SW plan for now or wanting to change that as I am happy to help with it if you want?

Well just had the results of my blood test, (over the phone of course), and I'm back to being pre-diabetic and have a fatty liver, not good news, but you push your weight up by 7 lbs when already overweight and that's what you get. So back into my online order for tomorrow and added cottage cheese, smoked salmon and a few other healthy options. I've been watching Michael Mosley's new 'lose a stone in 3 weeks' what are everyone's thoughts on this?

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply toLundy67

Sorry to hear that Lundy, lockdown has been difficult and putting weight back on has been a problem for lots of people. I don't know about Mosley as I think he's LCHF and I don't follow that. I would say it is probably doable if you were strict with any weightloss programme to loose a stone quickly

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toBee-bop

There has been a lot of controversy about it saying 800 calories is too low, so I think I'll start with the NHS suggestion of 1400 calories/day to start with and think about it. I think if I were to go for the 800 calories for 3 weeks I did to stick to it rigidly to get all the right nutrients.

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply toLundy67

Yes, I wouldn't want to drop that low myself. I know that with SW there's emphasise about àeating lots of low calorie dense veg and fruit which I think has helped me most. I had anaemia and ended up on iron liquid so understand your concern about getting the right nutrition.

BrynGlas profile image
BrynGlas in reply tomoreless

Even I have not found the tour effort, I never did understand how to find all the gubbins or how to save stuff. I will be busy now for the rest of the day I think.

slipstick profile image
slipstickMaintainer2st 7lbs

If you feel uncomfortable about going to meetings which I can certainly understand then I suggest you can get at least as much support by joining in here as by attending the meetings. Weigh-ins and Daily Diary provide a lot of support/advice with perfect social distancing.

And as you've already lost 2 stones (well done) with SW then you've already learnt anything they can teach you. If you carry on eating the SW way but maybe a little less (it was adding more and more snacks that I knew I shouldn't that got me) and perhaps exercise a little more you'll be on your way.

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply toslipstick

Yes, I don't think I will go back to SW just need to find out how to use this site and I'm away. I belong to a gym but again a bit nervous of going back there too. I've suspended the membership through August on my doctor's advice and the Club understand my reasons.

Hi Lundy,

I am SW and I know how you feel about the new Covid-19 set up for group. I have weighed up the odds and am choosing to return. It has been a bit of a decision for me too but, we will be wearing masks and the groups are smaller and seats will be wiped down. It is a bit scary and I have been doing the zoom meetings with my group throughout the lockdown. My group is allowing members to come, weigh and retreat if they don't want to stay, can you ask your group if this is a possibility?

I wonder if anyone knows anyone who has kept all the weight off they lost via Slimming World? I know there are lots of people who successfully lose, and that’s great for them, but I hear so many stories from friends and their friends about the weight going back on again when they stop that specific approach. I have loads of other concerns about SW but apparently I sound a bit of a nutcase/militant when I rehearse them, so I will spare you those. My (rhetorical) question is therefore how long you want a flat tum for - forever or just while you pay your sub...?

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply to

Well I lost 4 stone 6 lb many moons ago at WW and obviously didn't keep it off. But I'm determined to do so this time. At 71 it's impacting on my health.

in reply toLundy67

It’s great that you are so determined. I personally think a low fat diet is difficult to sustain, much more so than a low carb diet, and we are much more likely to fling ourselves into the arms of unhealthy food when we eat low fat. But that’s my experience. We’re all different.

Lundy67 profile image
Lundy67 in reply to

Problem has been this 'shielding' period I have been through, over 4 months, very easy when you are ordering online for everything. It's easy to put cake, biscuits and chocolate in the basket. When you are in the supermarket you are more restrained I think.

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply toLundy67

I don't know if you saw in the news about a lady in her 70's going to the gym and totally changing her life around, she looks great and says she feels half her age, she has my total admiration!

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply to

yes, two women in my group one 2 and a half years a target member and another 11 months so far at target :)

It's when folks revert back to not eating healthily that weight goes back on SW is a for life approach, just like you with LCHF if you stop, and start eating chocolate cake everyday and wash it down with beer, you'll put all your hard earned work to shame too.

Once you're a target member you don't pay the sub by the way

in reply toBee-bop

Good. That’s great it’s not as unfruitful ad I have heard. . Hope your journey continues to be productive. Of course if I started eating chocolate cake again I’d put on weight, but I don’t like it any more - low carb changes our tastes. My friends and family doing SW still like chocolate cake but ‘mustn’t‘ eat it. Perhaps you have a different experience of course. I don’t find low carb ‘hard eork myself, but I appreciate some people do.

Bee-bop profile image
Bee-bopMaintainer2st 7lbs in reply to

I can still eat chocolate cake, just not everyday and I don't have sugar in it :) I only usually have it on special occasions as it is. You are right, our journeys change our tastes.

Hi Lundy67 reading through your posts below as you reply to other members in Nov 2017 I was undecided whether to go back to SW after a break where I put back on the little I had lost. I had been a member of the social team , at first I took the money and then moved onto weighing members as the consultant decided she would try to catch members who were weighing in and going . She also didn’t like those maintainers as she made no money from having them in her class- that was very apparent.

When my GP said we needed to talk about my weight I went home and said to myself I’m going to do something about it now so my husband said why pay all that money to get very little result . He googled and found the nhs 12 week plan which I followed with his help and encouragement....and it is free. After about 6 months I joined this forum and as a monday mass mover I have never looked back. I get all the support from the members here that I need and have made lots of lovely friends here who I will never meet but who are in the same boat .

I would say give this forum a go, whichever way of losing weight you decide to do. My husband eats the same as me he just has more potatoes and bread. I count calories and write everything down and still continue to do so even when on holiday. The money I would have spent on the joining fee and weekly fees I have used to buy some new smaller size clothes and I have never regretted it.

Good luck on your weight loss journey Sue🌸🌸🌸

Lundy67 in reply toFamilytree67

Yes, I've downloaded the NHS plan which has miraculously landed in my email, maybe from being on the 'shielding' list and the government's new initiative for everyone to lose weight. I signed up for 'Travel Alerts for Spain' when this pandemic started as we were due to go on holiday in June, which obviously didn't happen, and I'm now being bombarded with all these GOV.UK alerts, some useful some not. Definitely not going back to SW, why drive the 10 mile round trip to stand on the scales and pay out when I can use my scales at home for free.

Familytree67 profile image
Familytree674 stone in reply toLundy67

Well said you can do this . I can remember being told at SW meetings that if you want to eat a whole cauliflower and a whole chicken you can do so!!!!who really eats that much and nothing else. When my daughter was at home I was making something for me and something different for her and her dad but now we eat exactly the same which is much better. Tip from SW measure yourself and make a note of these measurements somewhere no one needs to know but you will see the progress you will make. As in all things your weight loss journey needs to be sustainable for life not a short term fix. We haven’t been anywhere much as my husband is over 70 and very thin . We’ve cancelled 4 short breaks and are about to cancel another for start of September, don’t want to risk undoing all the hard work so far. At the moment we in Calderdale are in partial lockdown for the second week , just miss not going to our daughters at the weekend but we need to keep our small group ie daughter son in law his parents and us safe what would we do without FaceTime . Have a lovely week Sue🌸🌸🌸

I suspended my membership at the gym until the end of August when it reopened on 25th July as I only came off shielding on 1st August so was waiting to see what happened. My doctor says I should exercise and have been for lunch there twice, healthy options, and they seem to be in 'control'. The golf course is busy but the classes are quiet apparently so maybe I should go back on 1st September?
