Losing weight with fibromyalgia and PTSD?

Kirstein profile image

Is anyone else struggling to do this with chronic pain and mental health issues? I have fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety and PTSD. Plus a full time job and 3 kids. So the get-off-your-couch-and-run stuff isn't going to be possible, and managing my mental health, my job and my PTSD without my head exploding is a full time job.

Hi and welcome, Kirstein :)

There are other communities to help with your various health concerns, although we do have some members that are affected by some, if not all of them.

healthunlocked.com/fibromya...

healthunlocked.com/nras

healthunlocked.com/anxietys...

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you :)

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news :)

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate :)

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too :)

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hello Kirstein, wish I could be of help, but I don't know enough about your conditions to be able to comment. I see moreless has given you lots of links. I hope you find them useful. Keep posting here once you have had a chance to read through everything. We are a supportive group of people. I wish you the very best of luck.

Hi Kirstein I'm sorry to hear that you have fibro and ptsd and with 3 children and a full time job you must find it hard to work.i too have fibro and other health issues but I've still managed to lose weight, i started on the forum in October 2016. and I've lost4 stone's. You've taken the first step coming on the forum and with all the help and advice you'll get from all the lovely helpful members on this site i'm sure you will lose weight in no time, the biggest thing i did was to cut down on portion sizes cut out cake fruit scones biscuits etc i can't excersise at all but i'm sure if you put a stepometer on you will find with your work and all your running about with your family you will bump up the steps lol i hope this is hellpful Kirstein. I don't post often due to essential tremor i find it hard and i know this will sound contradictory after this comment but i find it hard commenting but i thought you would like to hear from a fellow fibro sufferer, we are all at different stages of the illness but there are other members who have it as well. Take care good luck Rosie xx

I have arthiritis, anxiety and PTSD! And a diagnosis of bipolar which I wasn't sure about and has been since been 'overturned' by a specialist I went to see. I also have carpal tunnel in my hands and rheumatoid arthritis which seems to be everywhere. It's hard to lose weight with chronic health problems but hopefully you will find support on here. We can do this!

Hi Kirstein. I'm another newbie and also have rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Had a couple of bouts of depression due to work-related issues about three years ago, but ok now, though still take citalopram which keeps it at bay. Two kids, but currently off work as I broke both ankles last August and recovery is slow (looks like I have developed a condition called CRPS). So can really empathise.

I've put on 3 stone in the last three years - although I already had RA my physical problems (fibro, other back and hip issues) began to get worse around the same time as my initial mental health problem. Whether that's down to drugs, decreasing amount of exercise, consoling wine or a mixture of all of these I don't know, but I've had enough. I want to look like me again!

So I'm calorie counting; keeping a food diary with regular weighing; cutting back on alcohol and donating savings to a local community cause; monthly photos; following a 10 minute a day exercise programme (and this is based on exercises my physio expects me to do anyway - like you anything more challenging is out); and finally listening to hypno gastric band tapes (time will tell whether they work for weight loss, but they relax me and help me to sleep which in itself is worthwhile).

So, basically throwing the kitchen sink at the problem. Don't know whether this will work, or would even be considered advisable, but am going to give it a go. I'm hoping support from this forum will also help. Good luck xxx

Hi I'm also new to this group and am suffering with the same conditions as you. I didn't think I would find anyone struggling like me . I find it so hard to get motivated when in so much pain. Hope we can help each other.

I have ME and bipolar so I can empathise. Needed to loose weight as diagnosed with prediabetes. Have gone down from 93kg to 76kg over a number of years. Did 5.2 for a while and it shifted the weight but sent me a bit manic. But a lot of yo-yoing on the way. Its definately not easy, but the alternative for me is getting fatter again, so i keep a record of my weight now. And try not to beat myself up.
