in another thread someone posted today about MCT oil. I hadn’t heard of this and have tried to research it. It seems to be useful in a variety of situations and claims include support in weight gain, increased energy, constipation t and pain relief.
Really it sounds a bit of a ‘cure all’. I’m wondering if anyone on the forum has used this, for what purpose and did it help? One article that I read suggested that it was used in conjunction with a Keto diet but I don’t know whether this is a necessary feature of its use.
It sounds a bit like coconut oil or omega 3 oil but I’m not sure.
It gets thousands of 5* reviews on Amazon - but then I know that there are thousands of people being paid thousands of pounds to leave such reviews on some products.
First thing that struck me was the weight-loss angle. They go on about reducing appetite and calorie intake. Well, I'm not sure that would be helpful for the majority of hypos because excess calories intake is not their problem. Some don't even consume enough. Loss of appetite is a common hypo symptom. And their weight gain is often water-weight, rather than fat. So, this oil wouldn't be a general panacea for most hypos.
And, from what I've read, it does seem that the keto diet is necessary to see the benefits MCT oil has on weight. Don't think I'll bother with it.
Well, no, not if you're hypo. Less calories won't always have any effect. Except to make you more hypo and put on more weight!
MCT oil stands for medium chain triglycerides, it’s a dietary fat, the “medium” part describes the length of the triglyceride chain.
MCT is almost always mentioned in the context of keto because they are arguably more easily broken down and made into ketones, some argue it’s so easy to make ketones from MCT that MCT oil is basically a source of exogenous ketone - so all the benefits of anti-inflammatory ketones without the downside of the systemic stress that metabolic ketosis puts on the body.
I think give it a go if you’re interested some people really feel the benefit of it and I’d say it’s a low risk investment.

Thanks for that.
I think I’ll leave my body to rest for a while following the assault wrought upon it by pharmaceuticals 🙄

sounds very much as though it has similar properties to Omega 3

Ketones are quite different to omega 3, but both are supposedly anti-inflammatory
MCT Oil is presented on many low carb forums as an alternative to the keto diet. Instead of restricting carbs to the point of starting to produce ketones, you can take 1 tsp of MCT oil with each meal instead and get the same effects (increased fat burning from increased ketones). I have no idea if these claims are true. I tend to be skeptical whenever someone offers a miracle solution. It would be interesting to hear from people who have actually tried it.
