Menopause

Symptoms of the menopause

Most women will experience menopausal symptoms. Some of these can be quite severe and have a significant impact on your everyday activities.

Common symptoms include:

  • hot flushes
  • night sweats
  • vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • difficulty sleeping
  • low mood or anxiety
  • reduced sex drive (libido)
  • problems with memory and concentration

Menopausal symptoms can begin months or even years before your periods stop and last around 4 years after your last period, although some women experience them for much longer.

Treatments for menopausal symptoms

Your GP can offer treatments and suggest lifestyle changes if you have severe menopausal symptoms that interfere with your day-to-day life.

These include:

  • hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – tablets, skin patches, gels and implants that relieve menopausal symptoms by replacing oestrogen
  • vaginal oestrogen creams, lubricants or moisturisers for vaginal dryness
  • cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – a type of talking therapy that can help with low mood and anxiety
  • eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising regularly – maintaining a healthy weight and staying fit and strong can improve some menopausal symptoms

Your GP may refer you to a menopause specialist if your symptoms do not improve after trying treatment or if you're unable to take HRT.

Symptoms of the menopause include hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

The main treatment for menopausal symptoms is hormone replacement therapy. Not all women need treatment.

Endometriosis & Menopause

Has anyone with severe Endo gone through the menopause young? I'm only 38 and it appears my time has come. Did you take or were you recommended HRT? I've previously had Zoladex so in a way know what to expect but not sure if anyone has experienced issues with standard menopause treatments.

Menopause or Lupus or probably both?!

It is hard to deal with an autoimmune disease without the menopause coming to join the party!! I wish I had been more sympathetic/interested when other women were talking about their challenging menopause symptoms, I really had no idea how debilitating it could be.

What happens after menopause?

Has anyone on here, gone through their entire adult life with Endometriosis, treated it with various treatments, surgery, combined pill, gone through a natural menopause and then bam ‘just been cured!’ The reason I ask is because that’s how every single bit of information you read online states!

Menopause - a great podcast!

https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/zoes-co-founder-jonathan-wolf-on-the-future-of-nutrition-science/ I just listened to this amazing and informative podcast. It lasts around 45 minutes; it's definitely time well spent!

Hot Flashes/Night Sweats - NOT due to Menopause

I want to know what other (than menopause) health conditions cause hot flashes and night sweats. And what tests are there to confirm the actual reasons. Thank you.

Anyone concieved whilst taking hrt

I'm 44 and menopausal but strangely I have zero symptoms of menopause apart from absent periods. I have started taking hrt oestrogen gel and Utrogestan progesterone which to induce a monthly bleed. Is there a chance I can still concieve?

Does anyone else think this could sort of work?

I don't know, but maybe it would be beneficial to induce menopause to stop the hyperplasia of the endometriosis and the bleeding cycle.) Has anyone else had this and has it worked?

HRT and Ovarian Cancer

I went to see a menopause doctor at the hospital- she said it should be fine for me to have also. All my genetic tests were negative so she said the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks for me as I'm young for the menopause. She told me about long term issues I might suffer if I don't have it.

How do we find out about our baseline hormones and treat them?

I also find it so difficult to navigate any treatments other than the pill or the coil, and every HRT is based around menopause treatment. Any recommendations much appreciated, I'm London UK based.

Hormones

Have any Women with PD felt a difference if you take hormone replacement after menopause. I'm sure mens hormones change as well, but no familiar with that. Just curious. Thank you, Maria🌺

Has anyone had HRT implants? Would love to know your experience and where you’ve had them done please

It’s my only option left as I have dreadful menopause symptoms since my hysterectomy. As far as I know they’re not available on the NHS so I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a private clinic/hospital or particular doctor who does implants?
