Can someone give me some advice on my son's visit to Auto immune Doctor. His symptoms are: Debilitating migraines and backround headaches, lack of appetite (way too slim), tiredness a lot of the time, sinus and mucus issues, sore throats, low immune system (gets every bug going), regular diarrhoea and constipation. Could this be a thyroid issue ? He is not on any medication.

Thank you to all.

With his last thyroid test being 12 months ago he really needs a full thyroid panel now to include TSH, FT4, FT3 and thyroid antibodies.
It would help to have new nutrient tests too. As he's taking Vit D supplement he should be testing twice a year to ensure he's taking the correct dose and whether he needs seasonal adjustment. Other nutrients should be tested annually.
He should ask GP to do these tests but if he can't get them done then consider doing the full thyroid/vitamin panel with one of our recommended labs. Post results and reference ranges for new tests when you have them and we can then help further.
thank you for the reply. Yes I will ask the Doctor to do those tests and if any are missed we can do them ourselves. That's really helpful, hopefully we will get a good response from the Doctor. Thanks again.
all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
List of private testing options and money off codes
Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee
If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results
In week before blood test, when stop vitamin B complex, he might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12
Post discussing how biotin can affect test results
Hi, obviously the previous replies are paramount, but I just wanted to add about migraines. For at least 6 years before diagnosis I would get dreadful migraines. I spent my 50 birthday in bed only getting up to throw up 😞 was one example. On these occasions my Imigran which is my prescription med didn’t work.
Since being diagnosed I’ve worked out that when my levels dip low I get these terrible migraines. I’m not saying this is the reason for your son’s migraines, but it’s a consideration.
I also felt a lot better when my vitD was over 80 (and since being on here I keep it around 100).
I hope you and he find some answers soon and that his symptoms improve too.
Hi Lovecake, thank you for your reply. That is really interesting, I hope you are better now, migraines are so awful. My son has been taking vitamin D for about a month now and already the intensity seems to be a bit less so hopefully that is a factor. Thank you so much, all the best.
My vitD was 21 when first tested by an nhs endo. My then GP wanted to ignore his request for loading doses of vitD until my thyroid level was better!!! I wish I had known even half of what I know now 14 years ago, I might not have had so many rough days (but I’ll never know).
I still get migraines, but can control them with migraine meds, except when my levels drop. So a big improvement ☺️🧁
Just wondering about your son’s B12 result, Bubydizer, which, considering he is taking B vitamins, seems rather low, as well as his vitamin D.
From the book, 'The H Factor' by Patrick Holford:
“B12 lowers homocysteine giving less risk of stroke, etc and a high homocysteine result is one of the more reliable tests for B12def def. although can also be high in thyroid disease”.
My son, though much older, has had a huge turn around in health since boosting his vitamin D3. Gareth Davies, Phd, is a top researcher and now takes 10,000 i.u. a day.
Hi Polaris, thank you for your reply. The Vitamin D does seem to be helping, he has been on it a month. That information is great I will research it. I have B12 deficiency, I think from needing thyroid medication for years and not getting it so I will keep an eye on his. Thanks again for all this.
