I have just received my results, I took the blood test as I am experiencing symptoms which are not normal for me. Hashimotos is common within my family but I have never had any blood tests which show I have any thyroid issue. I do have PA and self inject - I have the intrinsic factor missing and was diagnosed many years ago. I am also always low in ferritin, and supplement with ferous fumerate. I also take vitamin D
The thyroid results have all been returned as normal, but I was surprised to receive a high cortisol result.
The symptoms I have been having, of course have been "due to the menopause", but I am not so sure hence the blood tests. The symptoms could all fit an under-active thyroid, some could be due to low ferritin but we all tend to know our own bodies. I used to run 30-40km per week, but currently struggle to walk any long distance, of course weight has increased, I have always eaten high protein, low carb and my diet has not changed.
My questions (apologies if this being in Thyroid is not the correct forum) is what do my results look like to those of you with knowledge here, and homing in on the cortisol level, should I be worried about this and what should I do next? Many thanks in advance. Blood taken just before 0900

You might want to discuss this with your GP and maybe request testing for Cushings disease.
Ferritin 30.7 13 - 150 ug/L
supplement with ferous fumerate
Is the ferrous fumerate prescribed? Your ferritin level is bordering on iron deficiency, NICE class a ferritin level of <30 as iron deficiciency. From: cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...
In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.
Have you had a full iron panel to see if you have iron deficiency? And a full blood count to see if you have anaemia? If not ask GP to do them.
Vitamin D (25 OH) 86
How much Vit D do you take? Do you take it's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7?
Serum Folate 16.30 8.83 - 60.8 nmol/L
It's recommended that folate is at least half way through range so about 35 plus with that range. As you take B12 injections do you use a B Complex as well do keep all B vitamins balanced?
Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption
We have received further information the lab about ferritin reference ranges. They confirm that they are sex dependent up to the age of 60, then beyond the age of 60 the reference range is the same for both sexes:
Males 16-60: 30-400 ug/L
Female's: 16-60: 30-150
Both >60: 30-650
The lower limit of 30 ug/L is in accordance with the updated NICE guidance and the upper limits are in accordance with guidance from the Association of Clinical Biochemists. ‘
Thanks for the replies - Cushings in the obvious cause for the high cortisol, which of course I would expect to be the next course of action hopefully.
Apologies for not providing more info on the iron - ferritin and hb is checked regularly as I have always had problems with IDA, sometimes requiring iron infusions and blood transfusions. This has gone on for as long as I can remember, with no cause ever found despite numerous tests of all kind, hence supplementing with ferrous fumerate. 30 is a very good ferritin level for me - the lowest it has been is 1.
I supplement with all the other recommended vitamins/minerals as people have kindly suggested.
I may do another Blue Horizon test for cortisol in the future to see if there is the same result. A GP is always to ready to asign any symptom to the menopause.
Just to add, I am presuming my thyroid results are all fine, is that correct please? Also is there any connection with thyroid and high cortisol please?
