I started with symptoms in Nov & started carbizamole 1x10mg in Jan, with 10mg x 2 a day. Drs blood test confirmed over active thyroid & this was followed up at the hospital last week. Got my hospital results back but no idea what they mean. I’m also getting some private tests done.
These were done at 2pm as that is what time my hosp appoint was.
Basophil count 0.00
Eosinophil count 0.20
Free T3 8.3
Free T4 20
Haeomocrit 0.429
Haemoglobin 156
Luc count 0.10
Lymphocyte count 1.60
Mean cell haemoglobin 31.6
Mean cell volume 87.0
Monocyte count 0.40
Neutrophil count 2.70
Platelet count 215
Red cell count 4.94
TSH 0.01
White cell count 5.1
Thanks so much

Your previous result were likely much higher & carbimazole have brought FT4 & FT3 down.
FT3 looks to be above range so hopefully this will balance out & come into range with a bit more time.
The TSH can take much longer to rise, so is still undetectable @ <0.01.
Doctors want to see this rise into range, but whats important is FT4 & FT3 are in the right place, not too high or too low.
The other results are to do with full blood count, looking at white / red blood cells. Doctors look at the results in context. 1 result slightly out of range would not cause concern. Mean cell haemoglobin is marked as high but haemoglobin looks to be in range.
Antibodies have not been tested on this test.
For now I think you are on right track. You’ll need to be tested every 6 weeks and carbimazole dose adjusted until on a stable dose.
The medicheck advance test you arrange includes TPO & TG ant but not TSI or TRab which are evidence of Graves.
Do you also have a positive diagnosis of Graves Disease with over range antibodies ?
probably written as something like a TR ab - a Thyroid Receptor Blocking antibody or a
TSI - a Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin - with a number and a under/lower marker looking like a ?
This is an immune system response and something has triggered your immune system to turn on itself and start attacking your body rather than defend it and quite why this is happening now is a question and you are more likely to know the answer than others.
Graves is said to be a stress and anxiety driven auto immune disease though there is likely a genetic predisposition with maybe there is a a family member a generation away from you with a thyroid health issue ?
You can read further around Graves if that is your diagnosis on elaine-moore.com
All the anti thyroid drug, Carbimazole, is doing is blocking your own daily thyroid hormone production so to stop your T3 and T4 rising any higher while we wait for your immune system response to calm down and hopefully get over whatever has caused this spike in your T3 and T4 levels - please add the ranges so we can help you further understand what is going on.
OK - so I imagine because your T3 at 8.30 and has a sort of < upside down it's saying it is over the range - and your T4 at 20 is in range :
So we are looking at a T3 just over range - guessing range of 3.10 - 6.80 ?
Guessing T4 range to be 12.00 - 22.00 :
It's not good to guess and suggest you ask for the ranges and if any antibodies have been found in your blood and the reason you have been put on an anti thyroid drug.
Please read the PIL - Patient Information Leaflet within the box of Carbimazole.
There is an alternative AT drug if this one doesn't suit you - Propylthiouracil ( PTU ) for short :
What symptoms took you to the doctor at this particular time and how are you feeling ?
We can all read what you are replying so there is no need to keep repeating the information as we ask questions etc.
Thanks very much. It started on Nov with high heart rate, tremor, always hot & I was going to the toilet lots. The Dr/specialist put me on 10mg carbizamole a day plus propanolol as required but I usually only have a couple a day. I’m not feeling any better but I’m not really feeling any worse. I’m having some private tests done this week so hopefully that will give a better picture…I really don’t understand any of the results at all 🙈
OK then - what private tests are you running - you can post the results and ranges in another post / question and you will be talked through what they all mean.
OK then - good this includes all your core strength vitamins and mineral, ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D and inflammation and antibodies most associated with Hashimoto's thyroid auto immune disease.
Graves is another separate blood test on Medichecks - maybe you can tag it in for next week ?
but this should have been run anyway by the hospital and I think likely just needs chasing up through your surgery.
Do you have online access to your medical records as it might be there somewhere.
yes…I will post if that’s ok to do so. This is the blood test from 8am last Friday. It does not appear to have much relating to the thyroid (not that I understand) Thankyou for your input so far
lab has cancelled thyroid function. FT4 & FT3 test as recently tested. It’s automatically set up to limit repeat requests. Sometimes a doctors note specifying patient on carbimazole or known hyper will allow over ride of normal rules. Specialist usually don’t have requests declined, depends on lab.
Apologies - I answered your post believing this was your first blood test.
I have reread and now understand that this is your first blood test result since being on the AT drug for over 2 months and in fact your first blood test was last November when I'm sure your T3 and T4 were much higher than they are now.
Sorry - !!
Can we have a copy of your original blood tests when diagnosed Graves ?
No problem at all. I am on hrt for menopause. Thyroid symptoms started in Nov & I had tests on Dec which confirmed overactive thyroid. Dr has tested me every 4weeks & been on carbimazole about 6weeks. Saw specialist last Weds who took more bloods (the ones I posted first) & the second ones I posted on this thread are from my Dr on Friday. Specialist has advised to keep going with the tabs as I have been doing. Just trying to understand the results really as I’m so new to this
Well, of course, we are all at a loss when something out of the blue happens to us -
I just wish this forum was around when I was unwell back in 2004 and diagnosed with Graves Disease as most doctors and specialists are not really forthcoming in explaining things in ordinary language to people who are unwell and already in a state of shock and confusion.
So originally your T3 and T4 results would have been much higher back in November and your symptoms more severe than I first realised.
I hope the AT drug has done it's job and your then symptoms alleviated - the risk is staying on the same dose of the AT too long and your T3 and T4 fall too far through the ranges and you then start experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism which can be equally disabling.
It would be good to find your very first blood test when your T3 and T4 were at their highest - and detail against this your symptoms then and the dose of the AT drug prescribed :
If you then write underneath your T3 and T4 results now - you will see the difference on paper as well as hopefully having experienced as positive step forward and symptoms alleviated.
The assumption is you are dealing with Graves and it would be good to also know your antibody readings last November for and for Graves that is a - TRab or TSi :
The most current research we have is suggesting that the longer the patient stays on the AT drug the better the outcome for the patient -
I think it should all comes down to the level of inconvenience being experienced / suffered by the patient and if well on the AT drug that should accepted as the long term treatment option, as the next steps are much more invasive and there is no guarantee of a total recovery, and you will be on medication for life.
After all we are dealing with an auto immune disease and not a disease of the thyroid - as the thyroid is the victim in all this - as the cause is ones own immune system having gone a bit haywire and doing the opposite of what's it's meant to do, and now we must wait for your immune system to calm down.
Are your eyes causing any issues, are they feeling dry and gritty though watering and light sensitive - if so please just use Preservative Free drops, lotions, potions, sprays and gunky overnight ointment.
Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Eyes are dry & contact lense wear has been reduced but no other issues…I’ll try to check up on those results. Thanks once again
