She had a telephone conversation & the Gp said he wants her to take folic acid & vitamin D for 4 weeks, have another Blood test and see whether he should refer her to haematology as her Platelets are high and Apparently they have been for the last 4 Years ( Which concerns him ) . No one has mentioned that before ,although her daughter is 4 years old now and Folic acid was mentioned during her Pregnancy . She has been exhausted for some time now & there is PMDD in our Family My Mum & Sister suffered terribly with it & we have been looking at that as a reason for her problems & how best to treat that . Would seem though that she has much more going on . Can anyone give me some advice as to what we need to push for . Thankyou

What time was this test taken?

Is she on Levo, if so how much and when did she last take it before the test?

There is no FT3 result. Many here pay privately to get that which the NHS doesn't provide.

She will likely need ongoing vit D replacement, most people do. It should also be taken with vit K2 to help it go to the bones.

A TSH of 2.2 on replacement is far too high so she likely needs a 25mcg dose increase.

she needs FULL thyroid levels tested

TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies

Always test thyroid levels early morning for highest TSH, ideally around 9am

How much vitamin D has GP prescribed

What’s her diet like

Vegetarian or vegan

Gluten free or dairy free

B12 is also too low…..but as it’s “within range” GP won’t treat

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Hi Slow dragon, it was her platelet levels I was concerned about as they were not testing for a Thyroid problem. We shall ask for Cholesterol levels to be checked, I’m not sure what strength of Vitamin D he’s prescribed as the Pharmacy didn’t have any in stock & we will pick up tomorrow. Unfortunately she couldn’t hear him well on the phone as he was quiet & had an accent. He said her B12 was ok , she has been so tired & can sleep day & night ..

If she has Hashi’s it’s likely methyl folate will be absorbed better than folic acid. I think I read that here in another post and in Izabella Wentz.

thankyou I’m glad you mentioned that, I knew there was a different form you could take but couldn’t remember what it was.
