I am 18 months into Hasimoto underactive Thyroid. My symptoms are worsening particularly gut/bowel health.Excessive constipation and bloating. Extreme cold feet and hands. Pins and needles. Tinnitus. I have been on Accord Levo 125 mg daily for over 6 months. I also supplement with D3+k spray daily. I also supplement with magnesium citrate 2.5 daily. This has now become ineffective. In January I had a colonoscopy and in February Abdominal CT scan. Can these upset the metabolism of gut more than normal? If so how long before things start improving. My results from CT which I have done yearly are for previous kidney cancer are all clear. Contrast was used in CT scan. My colonoscopy seemed ok too(GP referred for suspect gastrointestinal cancer) In her words she looks at worst scenario first)Result for medichecks

CRP 0.94 range 0-5 Ferritin 118 range 30-400 Folate 7.13 range >3.9 Vit D 65 range 50-75 Vit B12 99.3 range 37.5 -188 TSH 1.16 range 0.27 - 4.2. Free T3 4.2 range 3.1-6.8. T4 22 range 12-22. TGA 267 TPA 342. I have been strictly gluten free for 12 months. My blood test was done 9am on a fasting test. No levo until after test

Last year I was referred to rapid diagnostic centre by GP for myeloma check which was negative. My GP is caring but wont refer to Endo, wont test T3. Says T4 and TSH in range yet other specialists for other tests state in reports that Thyroid should be further investigated ie RDC clinic, ear nose, throat specialist, urology nurse. So why is my GP blinkered when it comes to Thyroid.

My TFT results are optimal and yet constipation is the bane of my life. I’ve managed to improve things by an understanding of different types of fibre. The reason for your constipation determines the type of fibre you need. Insoluble and soluble fibre works in different ways.

I’ve posted about this on IBS forum and included a useful link

Thanks Caroline. I'll have a look with interest to see what is on the IBS forum.

Magnesium Citrate 2.5 daily? I'm not sure what you mean - is it capsules or powder form? In Canada I use 150 mg x 2/day capsules or 350/day powder and often had to go up to 450/day. Once I started probiotics I am maintaining at 300/day magnesium plus 1 probiotic (80 billion active cultures) every other day. You do list T3 results so I'm not sure what you mean about your GP not testing T3. Do you mean reverse T3? Doctors won't Do that here either. I take Natural dedicated Thyroid. Do you take a probiotic? I was referred to an Endo. but found Her totally useless and not believing that gluten/gut connection for thyroid issues. I find Functional Medicine Doctors to be most helpful. Your thyroid numbers do not seem much different from my own and I always think my t3 is bit low. I also take LDN.

Hi Sboop. Thanks for replying. The magnesium citrate is 2.5 gram daily and is powder form. It was working fine but recently over last 2 months seems to be ineffective as other laxatives are too. The Results I have posted as I stated are Medichecks which is a private blood test I obtain as my GP only tests TSH and T4 which unfortunately alot of GPs will only do these. Yes I do take probiotics daily.

Magnesium citrate I’ve found has made my stools loose I’ve read about it. I’m now taking magnesium glycinate

Can I ask what daily dosage you were on. I tried 250mg daily which worked initially but now seems to gave no effect.

Just the recommended dose. I’ve slung the tub out now. Taking the glycinate 1000mg providing elemental magnesium 200mg 62.5%

Two a day

2.5 grams seems excessive! That is way over recommend daily dose is it not?

Sorry! I meant to put 2.5ml spoon which is equal to 250mg!

Above I meant Natural dessicated. Thyroid medication. Called Erfa Thyroid in Canada. All the Best with the higher dose of Mag. Citrate.

I also have low stomach acid which is common for hashimotos. I take a tablespoon of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water once/day which helps.

Snap! Tes I also take Apple cider vinegar vinegar every day in warm water

The best laxitive is high doses of vit C. But, how is your stomach acid? Low stomach acid causes constipation. And, so does low B12. Your B12 could be a lot higher. But, don't take B12 and vit C together! :)

Hi Grey. Thanks for replying. I have a bowl of fresh fruit at least every other day and prune juice every day. Would you recommend a B complex or just B12. Also things have got worse over past 2 months. With this in mind set you or anyone able to comment on the "procedures" I've recently had ie colonoscopy and CT scan and if this could have had an effect on upsetting the metabolism ..hence the problems including cold hands, feet tingling. Feeling of ants crawling under skin on lower legs. I do walk and cycle to exercise but these symptoms keep me awake on a night. I force myself not to sleep during daytime.

Well, I was thinking of a lot more vit C than you'd get in a bowl of fruit and a glass of prune juice. I would recommend working up slowly to 5000 mg a day.

I don't think a CT scan would upset your metabolism - it didn't with me. But, I've never had a colonoscopy, so can't comment on that.

Tingling feet sounds like a low B12 symptom. Given your level of B12, I should think a B complex would be enough. But, make sure you get one with methycobalamin and methylfolate, as they are the more easily absorbed. Thorne Basic B is a good one. :)

Wheew! That's better but not nearly enough. The daily recommended dose for men is more like 400 mg. I find 350-450 for me, as a woman, does the trick. You may have to adjust for yourself but you will find relief. My Functional Dr. tells me to adjust as needed or till your bowel says it's too much.

Sorry slip of the typing ...on dosage originally. I deliberately kept my dosage low as I wasnt sure if it would effect my kidney function as I only have one since op for kidney cancer 4 years ago. I've been clear since and no chemo was required but am very protective . Other member on here has assured me it shouldn't be harmful. My diet is very healthy . Eat alot of fresh fruit/veg. The urology specialist says I am going great with kidney function. But the gut function concerns me particularly if toxins built up
