I hope it is ok to start a new thread, I saw someone else post full blood count and wondered about mine. I've also asked about vitamins but the consultant said they don't need to test but they are sending me to test for anti bodies next.
Full blood count
Total white blood count 8.02 10*9/L [4.0 - 10.0]
Red blood cell count 4.57 10*12/L [3.8 - 4.8]
Haemoglobin concentration 134 g/L [120.0 - 150.0]
Haematocrit 0.427 [0.36 - 0.46]
Mean cell volume 93.4 fL [83.0 - 101.0]
Mean cell haemoglobin level 29.3 pg [27.0 - 32.0]
Mean cell haemoglobin concentration 314 g/L [315.0 - 345.0]
Percentage nucleated red blood cells 0.0 % [< 0.5]
Nucleated red blood cell count 0.00 10*9/L [< 0.05]
My doc says this test is fine
Also does anyone know if Carbimazole can affect the gums? Mine have changed colour and gone pale but the consultant said to look out more if ulcers. I am going to see the dentist about this issue next.
(Just to recap overactive on 20mg Carbimazole, with TSH 0.05 / T3 10.6 and T4 30.5 on last test)
I am thinking of getting a private vitamins test I just don't want to spend too much, who is the best in terms of value?

So those are already looked at and being sent to test anti bodies, if high or low (forgotten which way round!) I will either be kept on Carbimazone and dose changed, or sent for more tests like a scan
It has only been since it going overactive that I've noticed this change in my dental health so wondered if there was a connection
Is there going to be another blood draw for the antibodies test/s?
Sorry, I'm unable to comment on the gum issue as can't say have heard of it in relation to hyperthyroidism, and so was wondering if it could be an effect from coming off the lithium.
Hopefully u can update again when the antibodies results are available. I imagine the covid situation right now could be bogging down a lot of people, hence the scarce replies.
Hey yeah I should be receiving the form in the post any day soon to get the blood test for the antibodies and thyroid check, I'll update whenever I get the results
I may still look into a private vitamin test. I've found this forum helpful but then a lot of contractions when you speak to the docs, the consultant said ferritin and vitamins don't need to be tested as don't make much difference. Maybe this board is looking at health as a whole, whereas the docs are focusing on the thyroid?
I'm sorry but they are totally related - without a strong core strength and a fully functioning working thyroid you haven't good health :
It's a bit like putting the cart before the horse : if you want to do a good job you cover the bases to equip you better to deal with any forthcoming illness or disease.
Sadly there seems no joined up thinking in mainstream medical with too may specialist and very few with any common sense.
When taking Carbimazole, knowing and reading of it's serious side effects, how does one measure how sore one's sore throat is before the prescription is changed to the alternative PTU ?
I have the answer to that at least, the consultant is adding in a letter to gp if I get a sore throat they send for blood test! Or if any issues let them know.
You are only switched to ptu if the blood test then shows white cells affected.
By the way that sore throat I had went in a few days and I restarted the med and no sore throat since!
When u get the form, could u post on here as to which antibodies they are testing for? We can just help double check all the antibodies that need to be tested are.
Public medical services are not interested in prevention, just treatment, which is silly. Keeping costs low is also their priority.
Also important, please do get the white gums checked out.
Will do! I've not had the form in the post yet I'm expecting delays with covid as they are busy but she did say she was sending it so I can have the test the week! I will give it a few days then chase up!
I had the dentist check and that was just a bit bizarre. Another dentist came in to check and they were both unsure as so long since I have last been to compare (As covid) so they both say gums are paler due to being stretched, the bones look big in certain areas, and you can have bone growth so the dentist has referred me to the hospital. Not urgent but at least I feel thankful for our health services. I feel like I am getting a full MOT with everything going on!
Thank you I don't have any pain just change of colour, it is more if you get ulcers/ sore throat which is a sign to get the blood test. It is very wierd I will see what the dentist thinks! (May be ulrelated and just coincidence I suppose)
Also does anyone know if Carbimazole can affect the gums? Mine have changed colour and gone pale
Pale gums is often a indicator of anaemia, or anaemia which is in the early stages of developing, but with the exception of the MCHC all your results are absolutely fine.
I don't know if pale gums is a side-effect of Carbimazole or not. It might be.
Bear in mind that some results in a Full Blood Count aren't tested directly, they are calculated from other results, and MCHC is one of them.
Total white blood count 8.02 10*9/L [4.0 - 10.0]
Red blood cell count 4.57 10*12/L [3.8 - 4.8]
Haemoglobin concentration 134 g/L [120.0 - 150.0]
Haematocrit 0.427 [0.36 - 0.46]
Mean cell volume 93.4 fL [83.0 - 101.0]
Mean cell haemoglobin level 29.3 pg [27.0 - 32.0]
!! Mean cell haemoglobin concentration 314 g/L [315.0 - 345.0]
I've also asked about vitamins but the consultant said they don't need to test
Bear in mind that doctors are NOT trained in nutrition and think any nutrient levels will be fine as long as they are in range. Since all of your FBC results, apart from the MCHC, are within range I am not surprised at the response you got. I wouldn't expect any of the things I've mentioned (iron, ferritin, B12, folate) to be desperately low, but they might well be non-optimal.
