Hi All

A while since I last posted. Have done various things since my 2019 test including going gluten free which may or may not have had an effect on TGAB. My B12 has finally increased but still need to look at Vit D, folate and ferritin. As for the thyroid results I think they are continuing to get worse? ( sorry I can’t remember the relationship between each of them) Last time I spoke to my doctor I asked if I just had to wait until I was really ill(worse than I already feel) and the numbers suited her before she did anything and she said yes. So I continue to do what I can if she won’t help.

Thanks

First result is sept 18, second Feb 19, third July 20

B12 (25.1-165) - 41.3, 49.0, 123

Ferritin (13-150) - 85.2, 62.7, 41

FT4 (12-23) - 15.4, 16.4, 12.4

FT3 (3.1-6.8) - 5.21, 4.91, 4.7

Anti TP (0-34) - 42, 39.1, 44.2

T4 (66-181) - 83.5, 76.6, 82

TGAB (0-115) - 225, 220, 183.1

Hey Chickenlife. So you’re not on Levo yet? Your FT4 range is dire but it looks like you’re a good convertor even though your FT3 result is not optimal either.

Low TSH and low FT4. I wonder if this is secondary hypothyroidism? If that’s the case your GP is gonna keep you I’ll for a long time cause that TSH is not gonna rise.

I’d suggest you start supplementing yourself instead of waiting for the GP approval.

Thanks for your reply. Not on levo. What would secondary hypothyroidism be?

It’s a hypothalamus or pituitary problem. They don’t send out the signal. The feedback loop is broken.

She has elevated TGAb so it looks like Hashimoto's to me. Secondary hypothyroidism is when the problem is with your pituitary gland not releasing enough TSH rather than your thyroid gland being destroyed by your immune system (which is Hashimoto's).

I’m not sure it has to be one or the other.

It doesn't. You can have both. But, I wouldn't have thought that her FT4/3 were low enough to constitute Central hypo. Remember that the TSH takes a lot longer to react to fluctuations than the FT4/3. With Hashi's, it often tends to lag behind those results. :)

What supplements are you taking?

Active B12 is good.

Folate needs to be at least half way through range so quite along way to go.

Vit D has gone down quite a lot.

Ferritin is very low, have you stopped eating liver pate?

Hi

I haven’t been taking my vit D regularly and obviously that shows though even when I was it didn’t seem to have a big impact. I have been a bit slack on the folate and ferritin. Will give myself a kick!

You need to be taking 4,000iu D3 daily. You also need to take D3's important cofactors magnesium and Vit K2-mk7 as well. Magnesium helps the body convert D3 into it's usable form were you takin magnesium before?

Definitely get back into the habit of taking your vitamins regularly, you need to optimise your levels then maintain them. You can see the result of not doing so.

Yes definitely! I was taking magnesium and D3 with vit K. I was taking a high dose of methly B12 with folate.

I would self medicate if I was you. What have you got to lose? Just to add I lay in bed for two years thinking about it .. I wish I had done something sooner because life is too short.

Suggest you really work hard on getting all four vitamins optimal

Then retest thyroid in a further 8-10 weeks

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Low vitamin D obviously needs improving

Vitamin D

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average
