Anyone else struggling on newer Thiroyd NDT batches?

Hi, all.

I have taken Thiroyd NDT for years and did ok on it. I am not sure if it is just everything that has happened to my body this year (hysterectomy that led to severe internal bleeding, sepsis, then septic shock and a 2nd repair surgery in February; incisions hernia surgically repaired in May; sinus/throat, and chest infections in October to November) or if it is this new batch of Thiroyd tablets (batch 1500058) that i have been taking for a few months now. Others, like myself, have noticed these tablets are a bit different to previous orders. These are genuine, but a bit harder/crisper and crunchier textured compared to before. I am not sure if they are absorbing well enough or if my last blood test results last week are just saying my body is still recovering from 2019.

Results are as follows:

Tsh: 48 (0.50 - 4.00)

T4: 10 (10 - 20)

No T3 result even though my Dr requested it on the form, despite the fact that if the Tsh is over range, it is normally automatically done here in Australia.

I feel shocking, terrible pain and fatigue, hair so thin I am almost balding in places etc. My GP wants me to increase 1/4 a grain each 3 weeks up to 4 grains from the 3 I was taking and see how I feel then. Anyone else found a similar experience on Thiroyd lately?

Thanks for your help and time

Goodness, what an awful time you’ve had. I’m so sorry—here’s hoping 2020 is much better for you.

You’re either not absorbing or there’s not any active ingredients in your NDT for some reason. And it really could be either—it’s difficult to know which. 3 grains of NDT should be suppressing your TSH if nothing else, so something is very wrong, isn’t it?

Are you getting your Thiroid through your GP or is he one of those who’s happy to monitor you having self sourced it? Because if it’s the latter then I’d definitely be looking to get a different brand of NDT, or even, shock horror considering going back to levothyroxine in the short term in order to figure out whether it’s the NDT or the health of your gut that’s the issue.

As you’ve been so ill I think I’d want to know how my vitamin and mineral levels were holding up. I’d lay money on almost everything being deficient—Vit B12, folate, ferritin, Vit D.

Thanks for your help, Jazzw.

I get the script from my gp, then order it from an overseas supplier who was recommended through a thyroid health doctor i first discovered online wben levo wasn't making me feel any better. The company was well known and trusted. They no longer stock it now due to Thiroyd's discontinuation.

My GP thinks it is a combination of both the recent infections and medications I had to take to get on top of them, and the different texture to the tablets which is why she is willing to trial an "increase and reevaluate" instead of just swapping brands.

I was given a course of B12 injections a couple of months ago, and I know she requested that in my latest bloods but the results weren't given to me last appointment. I go again on Monday for a thyroid ultrasound result so will ask for FULL printouts of my results as she only gave me they thyroid function tests results. I don't think she requested any other vitamins even though i had asked. At the time, she did have an American doctor sitting in who only wanted to talk about iodine deficiency and supplementation for me, so my gp was getting very distracted.

Oh yes—I remember reading tour earlier post about the iodine-obsessed American doctor. Can’t make this stuff up really, can you? :-o Crazy.

Well, here’s hoping the increases do have an impact. I’d have thought you’d feel the difference reasonably quickly so hopefully you’ll know sooner rather than later whether you need to switch brands.

Is your Thiroyd from Thailand? The only Thai NDT still being produced is Thyroid-S. Production of Thiroyd was stopped a few months ago, so your tablets could be fake.

Thanks for replying, Humanbean. I sourced these from my regular supplier early in 2019, about a month or two before the prices started increasing so I am confident they are genuine. The taste and everything about the product apart from being crisper is identical, as others also said their order had changed to, as well. There is a New Zealand company making NDT now that I may have to loon in to if the increases in my batch don't improve how I feel.

Hi Overrunbykids, sorry to hear you have been so unwell. I think it may be the tablets. I am on batch no. 1500053 from Thailand same supplier as always and found I had to take 6 tablets in a spit dose to stay well. I thought this was a horrendous amount and tried to slowly reduce but felt absolutely awful after being so well on Thiroyd for years so I do hope the increased dose helps you.

Thank you Humanbean for the heads up on production thankfully i have a stock pile that will do me for a couple of years. Goodness knows what I will do after that.

Thank you so much for replying, My code.

I an hoping it is just as you have found, that I will need to just increase my dose, as this is my last bottle, and I cannot afford atm to swap to another brand atm.

Hi, sorry for long delay to your post but wanted to reply! I posted my concerns about Thiroyd changes when I had my batch No 1500057 a while ago. I managed to get some earlier ones and they seem to work for me. I hoped it was a temporary blip but didn't realise they had now stopped producing these altogether. I contacted Greater Pharma but am obviously too insignificant to reply to. Like most people I am worried about what to do when my stock of tablets runs out. You've had enough to contend with and I hope you find a solution and get on the road to recovery very soon x
